Aggravated at myself
« on: August 06, 2008, 11:26:03 AM »
hey yall this is zak. i just kinda want to get a load off my chest. i am so aggravated with my music skills. to be honest i suck. all i kinda know how to do is my m.o.m. gives me the lead sheet and i play the chords. i hate it! i want to rock the organ and melt people's faces off with my playing. i go to a white church (im white) and i want to back my pastor up on the B3. thats my dream. i wanna show them this white guy can play but more than that i want to just sit down and play before Jesus. anyone have ANY suggestions to better my music. any personal practice techniques that help you, tips, tricks, videos, charts, ANYTHING would help.

love in christ,
zak

Hey Zak:

First thing I want to say is to remember that life and death is in the power of the tongue. So speak life...you don't suck, you are a gifted musician in God. Secondly, (and I struggle with this myself), sometimes we begin to get discouraged when we compare ourselves with others. Growth is necessary and will happen, but as it does happen don't compare yourself with the next musician. You hit it on the head when you said you wanted to sit down and play before Jesus. He is the only one that you need to impress. I would suggest of course practicing your scales, and working on progressions in your practice time. Continue to listen to gospel music and pick out different sounds and progressions that you hear and practice them. Maybe check out some of the dvd's that LGM and other sites have provided. They are beneficial. And finally, surround yourself by and listen to other great organists (I know I talked earlier about comparison...but when you gain more confidence in yourself you can listen to others and gain from them without downing your own ability. Stay encouraged Man of God...be blessed

I think the best thing is start listening to and studying the music you'd like to play and work at it.  Being white doesn't have anything to do with it.  I've seen some white guys light up a B3.

Yep, seen some myself and was shocked.

Cosign totally.

The important thing you have to realize is that those guys you may be comparing yourselves to took a long time to get to where they are. They did not wake up one day and just know how to play, it took them years and years of practice.

I understand entirely where you are coming from. I also would love to be more advanced, however like TMR said, listen to the music you want to play, practice scales, chords and progressions and you will definitely get there.

I agree with everybody who posted.

You just gotta keep practicing. Start going to churches with good organist. Get yourself an audio recordewr, and record the services, When you go home, practice along with the recordings. Also practice while watching youtube or the radio. Practicing and praying is the only way. Some of you may think that praying wont make you better, but it will. God will place you in situations that will help improve your playing.

also get some wheatworks dvds. a good video for uptempo songs, is gospel keys 350

Hey zak!  It's good to see you, haven't heard from you in a while... Don't feel bad, I'm black and feel similar to you, lol.   I think one effective help would be to come here more and go through the instructional threads like in the hangout and in the serious musicians tab, I think you have to be a paid member to see that one.  If I put in the time, I know I could get there on the resources we have here alone.  Sadly, my time is committed to a lot of other places and my playing has been demoted to a mere hobby.

I have to admit I chuckled at the picture of you turning out some phat preacher chords in your church.  Does the pastor tune up?

Ha ha nope he usually shouts "oh I feel my second wind" or "mmmm... I feel like preaching". But his wife (the piano player and m.o.m.) Usually plays behind him on the piano and I'm too scared to get on the organ and follow. I know a couple of chords (thanks to sams muzik co) but don't know when to play them or how to add a run or progression in.

Yo I think everyone is kinda missing out on one of the most important things; Anointing!

Musicians could go and play some of the craziest chords and fastest sickest runs but without the anointing people will just notice the talent. As a CHURCH musician you would want people to FEEL the ANOINTING on your playing. Not FEEL the TALENT!

Don't worry about the chords and movements and changes and drops and runs ect. PUT GOD FIRST!!! He's the one who created all of that. If you show your loyality to him, He'll show loyality to you!!!

Just to chime in a bit, the first step you can take is finding your sound! How do you sound playing what you've heard, or how can you play what you have heard? Don't be afraid to ask the MOM what chords or theory she is using when using those push chords. Also, never leave God out of the conversation when asking for 'enrichment'. Bro, just go pray about it and watch God move-if your heart's desire lines up with his purpose! Just a few weeks ago I asked God to strengthen my ear so I can hear harmony and preachers whoop keys better and guess what, its happening! God's desire is for us to be perfect/complete in every good work(Heb. 13:21) and that includes music!  Sometimes we ask what we can do so that we feel better about what we do...when God can take the 'measley' and 'lackluster' from a pure heart and do more with it than a skilled, seasoned musician. Pray that God would stir up that gift(II Tim. 1:6) that is in you FOR HIS GLORY! Any other reason and it won't matter anyway! Be blessed,'FRed
