Sustain pedal help!
« on: July 14, 2008, 03:12:41 PM »
Blessings to everybody! I had a question about sustain pedals.  Our church has gone through two sustain pedals in a matter of 4 months and several more before that I recently found out about.  Now that I'm playing more keyboard I've encountered this problem firsthand.  I currently play on an M-Audio SP-2. Tell me what some of y'all know about more durable sustain pedals (piano style or otherwise) or maybe we need to change our playing style.  I figure that a cause of the problem could be because we play standing up.  Let me know what you think....

I have a Yamaha MO8 so I use the Yamaha FC4 sustain pedal. I know what its like to keep having to buy new pedals, but now that I have this piano style pedal I'm doing much better. I think that its best to buy the piano style pedals simply because some people have heavy feet and a heavy foot can cause lots of damage to a poor little foot switch. :D :D :D :D

Some folks just abuse foot pedals...I'd hate to be one...LOL!! :D ;D :D ;D :D ;D

Very good pedal. We've had the Yamaha FC3 (2 of 'em) in our church for about 6 years and they are still going strong.

I have a Roland DP-8 and a Yamaha FC4 (which I actually hate to use..I tend to not to lift my foot all the way up so half sustaining is a must for me...although it does hate the feel of it but I had it for about a year and no problems at all), and a Kurzweil pedal which I use for my Studiologic controller. Out of the 3 I love the Kurzweil the best.

One of the churches I play for has a M-Audio SP-2 for the Kurzweil and I can't stand that pedal.

LOL......I have that exact pedal!  I haven 't had any problems with it.  But I think it might be because I am originally a drummer.  I guess I might have good foot control (except when it comes to the organ?).  And I play standing up as well.  But I would agree.  You might be better off with a piano style pedal.  I use one at my church for the Yamaha.

I play on M-Audio SP2, Roland DP8, pedals with no brand name lol, the lil square ones, etc... and the only pedals I have had break were all Yamaha brand, so I avoid those now and I only buy the M-Audio SP2's- those last forever for me.

cosign. I play a Korg Trition, and so far. I have not had any problems with the M-Audio SP2 due to its being a universal pedal.

I also had the same M-Audio SP2 for 7months before it was stolen >:(

I did notice that sometimes it wouldn't sustain the electric piano sounds ?/? :-\
Otherwise nice & handy to use in boards with opposite polarities.

Have you found out what's actually wrong with the pedals?  Seems to me that it could be a number of things.  Sometimes it's a simple thing like a loose wire or a bad connection.  Believe it or not, many musicians are not familiar with the proper storing and handling of their equipment.

As for standing as opposed to sitting, I suppose it could make a difference, but I've always played standing at my keyboard, and my pedals last for years. (BTW, I have the same exact one Chevonne the "Speedster" has ...LOL )  ;D ;D ;D

So, I would recommend two things:

1.  Have someone (preferably an electrician), check out the sustain pedal before tossing it.

2.  Always keep a spare handy, just in case your pedal decides to give you a hard time or die
    on you ...

God bless  :)

I've had a little square sustain pedal similar to this one for at least 2 years and it has lasted longer than the piano style pedal I bought.  :o

U know this occured to me a couple of years ago.  So, I decided to take one of my pedals apart to see how it works. Most times if it ain't working no more, it's because the little rubber thingy inside ain't getting any contact when pressed.  So, u may have to put a piece of wood in there so that when u press down, it gets contact with the rubber thingy.  It could also be a bum wire or two.

I take that statement back. this pedal is pure crap. It does not sustain notes properly. I've only had it since june, and its broken already.
