Yo my dad hit a very valid point
« on: October 12, 2005, 06:48:53 PM »
This past Sunday me and my dad were talking, and he was like why do you take so many sticks to church with you? I said because sticks break and I need different sticks for different feels of different songs. He was like you can only play with 2 sticks at a time. I said but sticks break if I keep doing rimshots they will wear down and soon break. So he said if  the anointing of God is on you sticks wont break. So I am like why is that, he was like when the anointing of God is on you it is on the sticks and with the anointing of God being on you that means you have the right control of the sticks. I was like ok wellllllll, I saw Chris Kee break a stick. He said evidently he got too full of himself and not allowing God to take control, so his stick broke. Then I thought back when Chris broke that stick he broke it in like the first verse of the song. So I am thinking welllllllllllllllll!!! What are yall views on this? I need some replies on this.

Does your dad just find taking a bunch of sticks annoying personally - and came up with an spiritual excuse for why you shouldn't need so many? Frankly, none of that made any sense to me.

However, maybe your father is more spiritually wise than I can imagine...

Yeah, that story was kinda out there. Maybe God will anoint your dad with an ice cold one so he can chill out a little.

Interesting concept. I guess he is saying that under the anointing everything is perfected so that your stick couldn't break, slip etc. He seems to be telling you to work more  on your consecration.

He was definiley having a "Yoda" moment however, we could all stand to be more consecrated in our musical offereings. Try it and tell us how it turns out.

(I personally will keep my stick bag filled until the Lord tell me otherwise.)

I understood what your pop means but at the same token, no matter how you play if you are hard or a soft player you are going to break a stick evidentally . That comes with being a drummer. Wood of course as we all know after a while will shed. Unless you buy a pair of ahead sticks, you should keep more than a pair of stix with you at church.  8)

I personally carry a quite a bit of sticks.
A point I would bring to your Dads attention, besides breaking sticks, is losing grip on a stick. When we play, we obviously move, and get sweaty...you can lose hand grip and drop a stick...That happens no matter how much of Gods annointing is on you. It may happen twice in a service and not again for 3 months. but when it happens, you cant bend down to the floor to find and pick up the stick...You grab one from your stick bag. You do not want tot throw off the music.

So there is your defense for at least 2 pairs. I personally have only broken 1 pair, and they did not break during a service.

God Bless.

Does a broken stick matter to God?

I'm totally not seeing the connection between playing under the annointing and a stick, with no need or option for salvation, breaking. If God wanted to show his Power by not letting your sticks break - that would be one thing, other than, sticks are still bound by natural physicals laws - even if YOU'RE playing under the influence of God's annointing.

I believe that, while God is omnipotent, he only intervenes and operates through things that are significant to the Kingdom.

I actually feel silly for responding to this, lol...

Yeah, and under the anointing preacher should only take the pages from the bible that are relevant to their preaching. Afterall, if the anointing is on them they will remember those scriptures through divine inspiration.  Just Kidding

Besides breaking sticks; most drummers carry a lot of sticks because different songs require different sticks. when I used to play the drums, I had about 10 different sticks that I had wth me at all times. More importantly, the annoiting doesn't require sticks at all. God can use hangers. lol how many of yall know what im talikin bout?

LilBen, honestly all you need is pair of strong sticks that you really like.  At least bout 3 or 4 pair.  Your Dad is just being a Dad and not a drummer, if he was a drummer he would tell you what I just told you. However, don't be rebelious! This is just a part of growing up with parents  .

I can't do anything but repeat what others have already said! Since there is no BIBLICAL FOUNDATION to what he said, all I can suggest is buying sticks with 'good wood'. You know, oak or something like that. I use Vater 8A's and they stand up to quite a bit of punishment. ALso, Pro-MArk has a good line of sticks a la 747's or 727's try those.

I think dear old dad is tryna get outta buying more sticks personally!!! Be blessed, 'FRed

There's a fine line between having faith in God's annointing and mistaking the annointing for magic. That line has definitely been crossed here. By this logic, any preacher that forgets a word at anytime is also too full of himself. Any honest mistake that happens in church is the result of folks being full of themselves. :?

Im sorry but the anointing of god will drive you crazy. I dont think that playing under the anointing means playing at mp. Im Pentacostal and yall know how we do, we get our praise on! I dont think you can apply the anointing of god to breaking a stick. Theres been times where our praise and worship has been so heavy that I felt like picking up a bat and bussing the heck out of my kit LOL!!! But my point is just because your breaking sticks dosent mean you are not playing under the anointing of god. Plus If the keyboard player gets louder or lets say everyone else in the band does, so will the drummer, its music. Each part of a song has its dynamics, but In shouting music yall know there is no dynamics!!!! Its just straight up get your praise on time lol!!!! But for real ask tye tribett and sound check!!   We some times tend to get crazy for god.......and Its still under the anointing :D !

                                                              Be Blessed!!!
P.S. - Oh I do break alot of sticks
