Melodious vs Non-Melodious Chords/Songs

The question I have for experienced keyboardists on this site is when does one acquire the ability to “enjoy” those pieces that don’t sound melodious? Or does one chord with little attention to melody? I pray and believe I am a little past beginner stage.

I was trying to play SAM TOLBERT’S Preacher chords from one of his Music books:

Key C Major:
1st chord---2nd chord---3rd chord---4th chord-----5th chord---6th chord
C/EGAC----F#/EAbBbC---F/EbGAC---F#/EbF#AC---G/EGAC----G/FBEbG

A question I have is where does melody come in with these chords? I am trying hard but my ears are not connecting to any melody line. Am I missing something? I will ask Sam Tolbert in an e-mail as well or he may read it here.

I try to play chords that people submit on this web site or even on ernestandroline and end up playing it just a few times. I have come to the realization that if I can’t connect to a song/piece as far as melody is concerned, then I drift away from it. This implies I have to learn the chording to get my own sounds. Hard work, but can be done. It may be good for me in the long run, I guess.

My chording style is something like below. Just learning. It is using a more open chording style. I try to use three notes for my right (treble) because when I use four, I don’t get the clear sounds I need.

Left-BASS/Right-TREBLE

Db/DbFAb---Eb/EbGBb---F/FAbC---G/GBbE---Ab/EbAbC---Db/DbFAb---C/CEG (or C/EGC)---F/CFA (or F/FAC).

Thanks.

With preaching chords, the only time you play a melody is if u doing a run on the keyboard.  Like if the preacher starts humming, "Umm Umm Ahhh Ahhh," something like that u would be playing a run like the blues scale.  Then, you can play whatever chord you want.  The chords don't have to follow the melody here, and they rarely will.  The idea is to play a chord when the preacher finishes a sentence, like this:

"And as Jesus was dying on the cross,"
chord:  C / Bb-E-A-C (play as a hit)
"Hmmmm, yeah,"
fast RH run: C, Bb, G, F#, F, Eb, C
"He said, Father,"
chord: F / Eb-G-A-C (play as a hit)
"Ohhhhhhh Father"
chord: F# / Eb-F#-A-C (play as a hit)
"Please Father"
chord: G / D-F-A-C (play as a hit)
"Forgive them"
chord: G / F-G-B-Eb (play as a hit)
"For they know not what they do"
fast run in both hands: Eb, F, G, F, Eb, C
"Ummmm yeah"
chords: C / C-F-A
            C / Bb-Eb-G, Bb-E-G, high C *slide Eb to E

You get the idea, you have to follow the preacher and play chords and runs as you feel them.

Now, for songs, it is a good idea to keep some kind of melody going in the beginning, especially if you just playing and no one is singing.  People need to have an idea what song you playing and they can figure it out if you have melody at the top and chords underneath.  Once you establish the song, then you can play whatever cuz people know the song already.

Repost w/words bold:

"Hmmmm, yeah,"
fast RH run: C, Bb, G, F#, F, Eb, C
"He said, Father,"

"Ummmm yeah"
chords: C / C-F-A
C / Bb-Eb-G, Bb-E-G, high C *slide Eb to E

This might make it easier to distinguish chords from words>

Thanks a lot, T-Block, for those tips. I will take note of them and try the hits as well.
