J Hartwell's Urban Contemporary DVD

Can I get some critiques on this DVD before I decide to buy it?
What's your experience with it?

Yes, it is really great and will teach you progressions that will make you sound like you have been playing for years!

You also get a CD ROM with all of the chords that you can print out, so you can practice with or without the DVD, or memorize the chords if that is what you need to do.

Go on 'head and get one fo' yo'self!  :wink:

I agree - I had no idea what I was getting and I'm glad I bought it. Try and get the 300 Series book too. Its the best investment you will ever make.

Coming in late: I've got J Hartwell's DVD and it's worth the price. His playing is real sweet, and the production is very very good.

Some [minor] criticism:
1. Not all PDF's and midi files are present (at least on my CD) , so I had to get pen+paper out, stop the DVD and take notes.
2. Sometimes I find JH's explanations a bit confusing, esp when naming chords and keys (see the "ending chords in Eb" section) - at times the chord names just don't add up.

Having said that, do buy it - what I got out of it is the 'feel' of JH's playing, rather than hard theory (and he says this himself). Also, download the free lessons from gospelkeyboard.com if you haven't done it yet - they complement the DVD well.

i have the Jamal hartwell DVD and it is sweet. now he doesnt really get into alot of theory, his main focus in contemporary urban worship, if you want theory then get Jermaine Griggs 300 pg workbook and his DVD or VhS. me personally i got Jermaine Griggs and Jamal 's DVD and i have learned alot from both authors. thats just my two cents

I've got most of Jermaine's products. I've seen Jamaal's advertised on sites including Jermaine's. I just assumed his were going to be too advanced.

Plus, I think I've gotten to the point where I like knowing the theory of why we do some things. Jermaine typically does this well.

I've got Hartwell's DVD.  I've watched it through.  I definitely do not think it is for beginnners, but for someone who knows theory, and can take what's presented and work with it.

That works for me, and having said that, I think it's a great product, and I'm glad I purchased it.

One thing though... there are times when the keys should be showing at the top of the screen, and it's black instead.  I realize that this amounts to just an inconvenience really, but I was wondering.... is this happening on everybody's DVD, or just mine?
