Hi,im new to the site and am just getting into theory and i was wondering whats a method for playing 11ths and 13ths easier? and what i mean by easier is ive followed along chords people were playing on youtube where they would say it was a 13th chord but they're not stretching there hands across the board, its all in the right hand chord..just trying to figure out how to get the sound of a 13th in smaller amounts of chords thanks you in advance great site
The only neccessary notes for a 13th chord are the 3, b7, & 13.
you would most likely play "C13" like this: Left Hand C <--- root note
Right hand Bb E A <---technically this alone forms the C13 chord
Same thing for the 11th chord: 3, b7, & 11
However, very rarely will you see the major 3rd (E) with a major 11 (F). Typically the major or dominate 11th chord is used as a suspended chord because the 3rd (E) and the 11th (F) clash to most people's ears. On the other hand, a minor 3rd (Eb) and the 11th (F) sound acceptable to most ears.
Another thing, to add a little more flavor to extended chords, add the 9th (D)
i.e. C13= Left hand: C right hand: Bb D E A
