Hi, everyone, this is my first post here as a 61 year old beginner Gospel organist.  Found some of Jamal's videos on Youtube and this is what I'd like to say:

"You can't be the best. There is no 'best.' You can only be a good one." - Muddy Waters

That said, Jamal's teaching style works like crazy for me. And I love his playing.

Jamal is very good.
Jamal is very smooth, and he's excellent at improvisation.

One of the Best?  No.

You asked for examples of who's better:

Derick Jackson, PJ Morgan, John Peters, David Jackson, Mike Bereal, Kevin Bond, Eddie Brown, and Travis Sayles.

In my own humble opinion, I wouldn't say the guys you mentioned are better than Jamal Hartwell. You have to understand that every musician has "his style" and so far, Jamal Hartwell is the sickest Neo Soul keyboardist I know... When u talk about "talk music" or "shout" or "praise" etc he might not deliver like the Mike Bereal, Jason White, John Peters & Kelvin bond's of this world, but Neo Soul?! He's a Master!!!

I think you guys should really think about what Jamal is doing. His teaching is birthing musicians and that strengthens the kingdom.  For generations after he's gone what he's done will continue to have an impact. None of the guys in the Youtube videos above has done more than what Jamal has for Gospel musicians.

I am impress with his get it done attitude and willingness to further the gospel music arena for unlearned musicians and others who like to drop in and is able analyze and tell him what is doing. He just needs to learn the correct names of his chords. I watched him in his early days but notice he would give in-accurate names of chords. It seemed like his weakest names.  Also keeping chord formula's in context would help folks to understand the chord better. Ex. When spelling an Ab chord, you spell it Ab, C, Eb..... Not Ab, C, D#.  major chord Formula is 1,3,5 not 1,3, #4. I could go on but.... I admire his efforts. Not saying he can't play. I'm saying stop taking short cuts and learn at least music fundamentals and chord formulas. Theory will help and has been misconstrued by those who call fundamentals theory. Theory is not hard, especially after you've learned your fundamentals.

I think that he's very good and he does an incredible job with his software I brought his play by ear dvd. But I'd recommend Jermaine Griggs for "real beginners" like myself who knows very little of music since Jermaine Break it down from the very beginning and the theory is well explained that it is not annoying to learn (well atleast for  101 and 102  dvds) while Jamal stuff assume that you already now all  your scales, inversions and how to hear the baseline.  If you already know everything I said, go for it with Jamal; if not start with Jermaine.

But that's just my two cent

Jamal Hartwell in my Opinion is consider  "One of the Best". I've learned alot from Jamal and still learning on my own I've learned Theory and have a Good Understanding but Unless you practice Scales and Chord Progression on your own then you will never learn or know whats going on in a Song. Every one has they're own style you have to develop your own and just learn from others
