WHAT SHOULD I DO?!
« on: January 13, 2005, 05:39:09 AM »
Hi. every sunday morning or gospel concert night at my church, I run into a dillema 8O . All of the attention is on me!!!!!
I play with 11 of the most talented, experienced, and "highest paid" church musicians every sunday, but the audience focuses on me during the whole praise and worship service!

I even though about laying back a little and staying in the pocket even longer; then I thought that they were just amazed at the huge black lustered 17 piece DW set w/ Zildian gong inset behind me  , but NO, they were definitely paying attention to me.

being head of perc. I even gave the percussionist more fills and solos, but that didn't work.

Help me, because that would be disrespecting God and the talent he gave me, if I hold back. After all I'm not the only one on stage!

Be Blessed.....

:D Praise the Lord!!!!! I'm not a drummer but I can help. Your right, if you hold back tour talent, that would be slackin on God. Just keep given God the glory out of your talent. As long as you keep it about God and not yourself, the people will see that and begain to realize that they need to be doin the same. You could very well be their example. I think it is real good for you to post something like this because it shows that you are given God the glory. May God bless you brotha. :D  8)
Sing unto him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise. (Psalms 33:3)

You wouldn't be up there unless you deserved to be up there.  Just focus on who you are playing for (God) and do your thing.  :)

P.S.  Let me get one of those cybmbals!  :D

Wow. I guess you are great. Some of the comments you made in your post sound vain, but who am I to judge.

Play with the band is all I have to say. Maybe everyone is looking at you because you are throwing everything off. All because you get attention, that does not mean you are doing anything right or good.

Do you is all I have to say. Don't let other people dictate how you do what you do. Do what God tells you. If they want to stroke your ego, don't stop them. God will deal with them about it. If you never recieved any attention, it would make you insecure.

Do you and let your work speak for you.

SonorJ here. My bad!! the 17 piece set isn't just cymbals and toms!
let me explain: 8 cymbals, an 8' and 10' add on toms with standard 12' 13' and 16' toms kick bass, snare, hi-hat, and side snare.

ps.,
thanks for your help, may God bless all of you great drummers for the Lord!!!!!

After all that's who we are playing for anyway!

I feel you cuzo, especially if youve been playin for a while and your really tight, and everyone knows your tight its like all they do is watch you, especially after drumline came out, more and more peeps are paying attention to drummers.  When people talk to you and tell you how tight you sound and stuff, just tell em, its all about praisin God with this gift he's given you, after all you ain't up to entertain folk.  Maybe you get so much attention because of your gear, a size down of the kit could help, but if your church is massive ya'lls song selections are heavy on percussion then go with your current set, but if your tight, people are gonna pay attention to you no matter what.  I find that just imagining yourself in your basement by yourself playin helps alot.  Prayer don't hurt either

man i understand, i have people gathering close to stage just to 'watch' me minister 'to God' as He speaks to me thru the music.  They can watch if they want to b'cause thats 'my' outlet and the way I communicate with Him!... See, my point is, just to play your part in the team and use the music fundamentals and the God-given creativity that you already know and have.  There is no reason for you to feel like you have to overplay or underplay for that matter. I have learned not to pay attention to people, i feel like I have a job to do for the Lord.

I hope that makes sense.. peace
