??? DOES ANYONE ELSE TEND TO PLAY MUSIC FAST???

well it's easier to speed up than to slow down! i honestly would consider your drummer...........that's who holds beat! and anytime i am speeding up, it's because of him! it's hard to speed up a song while your drummer is holding true to his beat! now tempo is a funny thing!, i feel it is the hardest of all characteristics of playing music in general.........i have heard a lot of awesome drummers, but one thing thou lackest............" control of the tempo ".........so i guess in retoric.......do you play with or without a drummer........because tempo is like a high blood pressure; "it's a silent killer"...........and that aint funny!

well, now you have answered your own question...............let the drummer give ya a count, that's his job anyway!........lol

I agree that it is usually the drummer, although I have seen it where the keyboard player will slow down or speed up and go off tempo.  I find it impossible to change tempo (as a piano player) unless the drummer changes.  Lots of times the worship leader will look at me to slow down or speed up (I don't know if it's because I'm the leader of the ministry or because she thinks I can control that) but I always tell her she needs to communicate it to the drummer.  If he's not paying attention, I can do nothing to change the tempo.

In answer to your question, it may help you if the drummer starts off the song with a beat, and you can get a feel for what the tempo is going to be.  He really can't tell that you're trying to slow it down or speed it up - he hears you start off at that tempo and that's what he goes with.  Now if that's not the situation, and you are speeding up during the middle of the song or somewhere other than the beginning, you show practice at home with a metronome, so you are more restricted to play within the beat or tempo.

I'm going to let her can't me off...because we keep it the same beat all the way through with no problem....it's just that I go fast...I was thinking about having the director giving me the beat prior to directing to teh choir.

Another way also to learn how to keep the right tempo is to try to sing the song to yourself before you start playing. I had that trouble alot, and I actually had to get my dad to count for me while I practiced. However, I have found that singing the song to yourself really works.

Also, if you have a metranome, or a keyboard with a beat, play a song that is usually fast (like Victory is mine/This is the day) at a slower tempo. This REALLY teaches you how to play with the tempo, because you have to pay very close attention to not playing the song as you are used to playing it.

I hope this helps, because I have been there before, and sometimes find myself slipping thereeven now.
