Question for Keyboard Players about....
« on: March 12, 2008, 11:53:07 AM »
I would like to know what is usually going through your mind while you are playing a song.  While you are playing a song.

  • Do you have a mental picture of the chords your are playing.
  • Do you just let your mind go and play or what?
  • Are you thinking about What Chord your are going to be playing next?
  • Other?

 :) ;D Thanks in Advance :)  ;D

Usually nothing. I Really dont Think at all when I play. The only time I really think when I play is when I'm Learning a song and putting the left hand bass line with the song. After I learn it, I can play it in my sleep. I'm not really a  mechanical player.
When Playing in church with other musicians, you really gotta just let it flow. You cant be thinking too hard, cuz the song or spirit can change at the drop of a hat, and you have to be prepared to play.

But we musicians should always be thinking ahead. You dont wanna get to a certain part of a song and not be prepared for it. From an organ standpoint, I often set up the drawbars to sounds that I think I will use later in the song, so I can just switch easily. If you are playing synths, it is wise to have all your sounds set up in advance, so you dont have to search last minute. When you are playing a large pipe organ like the one in my avatar, It requires a great level of concentration.

Also when you are doing runs, sometimes, unless you are very fluent, it helps if you pay attention, so that you land on the right note at the right time. But with time you wont even have to think about stuff like that

At My home church, I had to read difficult peices of music, but I used to memorize them (my teacher used to hate that). Every time I would try to read it during service, I would mess up. Now I can play those peices without even practicing them.

What goes through my head while playing?  A whole lot of things, my mind be racing through service.  I think about:

- What chord(s) do I play next?

- Assuming a song or pattern repeats, how do I vary what I just played?

- Am I flowing with or against the spririt?

- What do I play for offering?

- Do I need to switch sounds on my keyboard?

- Do I play louder or softer here?

- Do I even need to play at all at this point?

For the most part, I'm always thinking ahead, trying to be ready for any situation that may come.  If the time comes for me to play something soft, I try to get a small 3 or 4 chord pattern started and keep varying it until the next part of the service.  I have my "safe" patterns already, but every now and then i get inspired to try something new.

I ponder thunderous questions like this one.
Or, if I know that a difficult passage is coming, I think about the fingering for that.

I think that the longer you practice and the more experience you get in your playing...you will actually have a mental picture of the chords you're playing. It actually becomes second nature to you...atleast it does to me. During the service the churches that I play for record the service and when I hear myself playing, I can't believe some of the things that I'm playing.  :o :o :o :o :o

I get an uneasy feeling when I hear myself play, I am my worse critic.

I usually record my playing too, just to gauge where i'm at concerning my progress.

I'm like that with my voice. I hate hearing it on tape. but now that I'm starting to play better, I love to listen to my recordings. I think half my youtube views are from me :D

When ever Im playing so many things go through my head. I think about the direction that we are trying to take the song in. Then Pray about it (subconsciencely) and feel what direction the song is going in. I always try to make sure that all of the musicians are on the same page(in the aspect of flowing with the song or the movement.)

Thanks so much for responding.  That is what I am hoping to accomplish is being able to see the chords in my mind as I am playing them instead of having to physically see them.  I will take this into mind and make sure that I practice on a consistent basis.

Depends on the situation. If Im playing by myself or with some one. How I feel. If I have been practicing or not. Its easier to play at random on the spot when you have a large chord vocabulary.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

Things that typically go through my mind while playing:

-What chord should I play next?
-Am I in line with the atmosphere created by the Holy Spirit?
-Am I flowing smoothly with the choir/pastor?
-Am I ministering or showing off? (gotta keep it real)
-Man that chicken downstairs smells good!   ;D

God Bless,
J

My main thought is, am I flowing with the spirit.  Typical Sunday Service while playing, I'm also directing the choir (I'm training one of the teens to direct), watching the pastor making sure I follow his lead, being in tune with the congregation.  All of my senses are hyped and I'm running on full adrenaline.  On some Sunday's I'm totally exhausted when I leave service, but I love it.
I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.  Psalm 34:4
