playing all key vs hit the transpose button
« on: January 14, 2008, 01:12:58 PM »
I was talking to a musician that been playing about 10 years. I told that l play the keys and i been play about 4 year now. I told him that I have 6 of the 12 keys down. he said why learn all the keys just use the transpose button and you can play in any key you want, he been do it for years. No one can tell the differents. Is using the transpose on the keyboard is cheating if you claiming the be the best. he reply if yamaha, korgs, and rolands stop making keyboards with the feature than he might learn to play in all the keys, until than it easier and quicker to transpose a key by using the transpose button.

Man that cheating :-[ :-[.

yup.

I dont use it because my first keyboard did not have one. And even though both of my keyboards have transpose buttons, I dont use it because,
-It moves the notes to different places on the keyboard, when I hear somebody start a song in say Ab I automaticaly without thinking, start playing in that key . If the notes were in a different place everytime I would get confused.

-Real Pianos and organs do not have transpose. You cant call yourself A "master" piano player until you can play in every key. Think about it. One minute youre playing all these fancy chords, but when the singer or band changes keys, your gonna be stuck, either playing simpler chords or nothing at all.

It is very easy to learn how to play in every key. When I was learning I would play whatever I heard on the radio, and there were songs in every key.

We have gone thru this subject a million times!! Do a search in the organ room and you will see tons of arguments of people who use it and people who dont use it

I did the search for you

It's like saying, "I'm an excellent truck driver, as long as the rig I'm driving has an "automatic transmission"?/? ?/?

A real truck driver knows how to drive a "manual transmission" and change gears.

In much the same way, an "excellent" keyboardist or organist must know how to change keys.
(Notice the key word here is, "excellent".)
It's vital to making smooth transitions, modulations, and key changes.

But hey, if the only driving a person is expected to do is in "automatic", then fine.
All I'm saying is, you just never know when you may be called upon to drive a "standard" ... then whacha gonna do?  :-[ :-[

(P.S.  Hope my analogy isn't too confusing...  ;D ;D)

I gotta agree that is a good analogy.  I'm still learning my weak keys (A, E, B natural).  I remember during watch night service, we went to another church and another musician was there trying to figure out where the transpose key was.  Mind you, I hadn't used transpose in years so I did find it tempting to use when some folks came up with their solos in who knows what key.

However, knowing your way around the keys makes you so much more versatile.  Just thinking about intermixing different keys together .. so much fun!!

hi,this is a fellow musician and i partly believe that transposing is cheating, but on the other hand it would be better if you learned the notes from a to z.On the other hand if you you are like me and play for a quartet group, nine times out ten you would probably have to take up that offer on transposing, just to save some future embarrassment.

that's just my opinion, don't hold me to it.

Hi LadyRhodes, welcome to LGM :)

I play @ home for 99,9% of the time.
Until recently, I dnt even dare look@ the transpose button..& my progress in playing in all the keys shows a very positively skewed improvement curve.

There is nop turning back 4 me@ this point..It has literally taken me less than 1 week to familiarize myself with all the keys in the few songs that I've faithfully learned in all the keys.

The key:

If U already know 1 key well, Use the number system: look @ each note as a number & apply it to anykey U want.. (In some keys U'll be amazed @ how your fingers will just move to the right notes without U having to think about it 8))

So come on U guys who've been teaching others to "just use the transpose!"..

If U'r not up to learning all the keys, that's fine, only U lose out on being an abled organ or piano player. But don't throw other enthusiasts like me into the pit of "Please don't sing in that key when our lil sis starts a song & we have to accompany them on the piano.

Transposing sounds crazy.  You have to use different voicings in different keys.  I remember one time I had run into a church at the last minute because the minister of music needed me to play.  So I only had time to literally walk in the door and go straight to the keyboard and start playing.  It was transposed...but at that time, I had ZERO experience on playing the keyboard.  The first 13 or so years of my playing was strictly piano.  So I was like "why does it sound so weird?  Why does it sound so low?"

Hey!  This actually happened to me recently!
I attended a funeral service and was asked by the band to join them because they had a keyboard but no player.
Knowing the songs they were doing, I jumped right in.  Lo and Behold, something didn't sound right ... Why?
Because the keyboard was "transposed"!  After resetting the tuning, I joined them once again, only this time, we were all in one accord ... :)
