FOR ALL THE PIANO TEACHERS!!!!
« on: December 10, 2007, 08:46:20 AM »
What material do you use to teach your students??   For example:

Do you use books such as Alfred's Piano Library, Faber & Faber, Bastian Piano?

-or-

Do you use your own material?

-or-

Do you just not use material at all....just go off of what you know??

When I was teaching a student gospel music, I went off of what I know.

As a general music teacher, I use the Alfred books. ;)

I find that by using both Alfred's, and supplementing it with your own materials (which you will gather from experience by noting what works best with what types of students) you will be best be able to serve your students. Be flexible and try several different approaches untill you learn what works best for you. Be Blessed. ;) ;D

I agree with Big T.  My grandson is 10 and has been taking lessons for almost 1 and 1/2 years. The teacher uses Alfred's as well as material either I or my grandson have selected. The intent is to keep the child motivated. It was the teacher's suggestion to find music that my grandson wants to play.

I will begin taking piano lessons next week.  I have already selected material (some is from this site). :)

I've just started a small class with some family members & use T-Block's material.

Later on, I will use the stuff by DNat & other LGMers.

To your response as a piano teacher for 37 years! I use all methods! It depends on the individual student!

I use the following methods!  Alfred Basics, Alfred All In One, Alfred's Chord Approach, Alfred Adult Books, Bastien, Leila Fletcher, Faber & Faber, Piano Town, John Thompson, Glover, Schaum, etc.

When teaching gospel music, I score my own and teach in a process of Theory!  Theory is very important in teaching! I also do the National Guild, SCMEA, NTMA, National Federation, and other piano festivals throughtout the State of South Carolina!  I presently have two High School Seniors Who are studying Music at two different Colleges. The Male Student attends Berklee in Boston, MA, and the female attends Converse College in South Carolina!

For those learning to read (typically younger students), I use the Alfred's series.

For those learning to play by ear I use my own materials (some of which are on my website - http://freegospelresource.com).  If they can read, then I use "Stylistic ii/V7/I's for Jazz Keyboarists" by Luke Gillespie.  And, of course, I refer them to this forum.  ;)

BTW - Why isn't there a piano teachers board on this forum?  That would be cool, so we could share our stories and ideas.

Honestly, I don't think there are enough piano teachers here to warrant its own forum.  Someone could probably start a thread and then we can share our experiences.  If enough people post in it, I may even make it a sticky.

Hi All Fellow Musicians & Music Teacher's,
I personally use the Bastein Series because it starts off using the left hand which is more complicated to train than the right hand. Be Blessed and vote in this years primarys and national election, so we can bring our men & women back home where they belong with their families.

Love you InChrist Name
