Need Advice
« on: July 31, 2003, 05:56:53 PM »
Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to the site.  I need some advice.  I began playing drums early on, and later progressed to keyboards. I play by ear very well but I desire to learn to read music.  I also learned to play in C# (transposing) and it's hard to get untrained of that method, since technology is so advanced.  I desire to be a true pianist and the only way to do so is to be fluid in all keys.  Can anyone help?? I would really appreciate your inputs.  Thanks in advance.

well I'm kinda the opposite of you.  I started off in lessons.  Can read the sheet music just find.  And kinda can play by ear...it's just in whatever key...But I am trying to learn all 12 keys...and play in all of them....for me the best thing I did is I rememberd the theory, the chords, and progressions in all 12 keys....it's getting easier...and on a lot of things I just don't even think about anymore.  My fingers just go there.

Get a sheet of paper out....transpose by hand...and memorize memorize memorize. :)

1st of all you should stop the habit of transposing into C#.  I got books by David Hersheberger on how to play scales, Keys, and chords.  In these    books..they have songs in them..different songs..of all 12 keys..then u have a lesson next to a song on the same page.  This is what I did..and some other way may be easlier for u to learn how to play in all 12 keys. I play one key per week..on any song that i kew and like to play.. your fingers will get used to playing and changing around alot.i think the most difficult key for me is..Bmajor {5#}  and A {C#F# & G#} its the way my fingers had to be positioned and some of them fingers were very weak.  I had learn all my keys in 12 weeks.  I didn't kow them well with my fingers if u know what i mean. But, this was a start for me. Now I  know them all well and happy I took the time out to learn them..cause any sheet music i get..I can play the song in it..and thats make me feel good.  I don't even like the word C Major..cause that all teachers talk about lst..to start for beginners to learn. Hope this helps.

I find it a lot easier to play in sharps and flat than I do in the white keys.  I have learned choir songs in other keys but for "Praise & Worship" I transpose to keep the service flowing.  I will be sure to use the reference tiu posted.  Hopefully, I will learn all my keys soon.
