Spicing up Key of "D"
« on: October 29, 2006, 11:20:48 AM »
Hi All,

I am a relatively new player (been playing for a year) & for our praise and worship I play in the key of D, transposing when the need arises !!! Need to start learning other keys asap.

In the meantime, could anyone help me with tips on how to spice up songs for our service in the key of "D".  Suggestions would be mightily appreciated.. We do songs like:

Breathe (this is the air I breathe,)
You deserve the Glory
I stand in Awe

Many thnx
Stay blessed !!

You probably should start with arpeggios and scales.

Hello Sybie5,
You can do a couple of simple things. For example, instead of playing the regular D key  (D/D Eb A) , I modify it sometimes by playing a 7 2 3 5 modification. Sometimes I also add a 2 or a 7 to the regular chords.

For example in Breathe, you can play this:

Left Hand/ Right Hand
D A/D E F# A       This is the        << I added the E key making the chord a 1 2 3 5 chord.
G D/G B D F#       air I breathe     << I added a F# to a regular G chord (making G maj7)
D A/Db E Eb A      This is the        <<I changed the regular (1 3 5) D chord to a 7 2 3 5 to give it a different sound (is there an actual name for this trick? I don't know)
G D/Eb A B D        air  I breathe    << I did another 7 2 3 5 modification to the chord of G, just for showing purposes

You can apply these easy tips anywhere on any song. I normally use the 7 2 3 5 modiication when I am coming back to my initial key from any chord progressions. It also sound cool with arpegios. Also, you can use these tricks on any chord. Once you see the pattern and you know your scales, it can be applied anywhere. Once again, i learned how to play by ear, so I don't know any technical names for these easy tips.

Well I hope this helps. Be blessed.

You could alter the 1 chord with different voicings.  ex. D/ Gb A D   to     B/ Db E A  or D /  E A Db

Other things to incorporate are passing ch

Many many thnx to all.. As a new member to this forum I have to say that I'm simply knocked back by the amount of help available. It simply does wonders for new aspiring musicians like myself. To God be the Glory.

Thnx again !!

These suggestions are execellent.   can you give some chords for the verses? example:  your very word spoken to me..etc....

G D/Eb A B D        air  I breathe    << I did another 7 2 3 5 modification to the chord of G, just for showing purposes

I've heard a lot of pianists say that.
That's actually I think the key I'm most solid in. My runs are probably best in D too, I think the fingering in that key is easier than most.
If I had to play while the pastor was talking or something I would play in D mostly.

Keep in mind though I wasn't raised on gospel music though, so Db is foreign to me. I can play in all keys fine. But Db or Ab are probably the two last keys I'd use.
