Open Post... Biggest Mistakes Made While Playing

I once played at the Mayor's Annual New Years Ball in Darmstadt, Germany.  I made the BIGGEST MISTAKE any musician can make; I forgot the chords to their National Song.  For whatever reason.... I drew a blank after I played the first note.   See, I cannot read music... I can only play from what I see others do or what the Good Master has given me.  Needless to say... they never invited me back.

Lesson Learned...Practice before you play anything...  More than once
Hopefully this helps someone

Yeah, there was this one time, when I was the drummer for my church.  My Dad was the organist at that time.  Let me tell you we were playin some serious shout music.  Well from time to time we would do this break in the song.  The break would lead to a solo well it was my turn to do the solo.  So, I was doin my little solo when all of sudden my sticks break,  I mean both of them  and I had no extras ready.  But the funny thing is where the broken stick pieces flew.  One piece hit my dad on the side of the head causing him to stop playin, and then another piece flew into the congregation.  So basically I had no sticks my dad couldn't play he was in pain.  The song came to a terrible end.  All eyes were on me,  I was soooo embarrassed

btrue, I haven't heard anything quite like that before  We've had a couple of drummers break sticks but nothin like that and we always have backups just in case.

The most embarassing thing I've done on the piano was while someone was talking. I was scratching my face or nose or somethin and when my hand went back down I hit a key and what made it worse was I had my foot on the sustain pedal so the note was sustained for a couple of seconds before I took my foot off, lol.

Other minor mistakes are not being able to find the right key in a song. I've even heard some folks just start playing chords in the wrong key and it takes them a while to finally realize they're in the wrong key.

I hope this don't make it sound like we have terrible musicians, we are very blessed with talented musicians but like everyone else, we aren't perfect and do make an occasional mistake from time to time.

Be Prepared

God blesses people and gives them all kinds of talents but we must practice and be prepared when the opportunity to show our talent comes. I heard that either D. James Kennedy or Schuler starts preparing for his Sunday  sermon on Saturday Morning. Both of these men have been giving sermons 40+ years. However they prepare a day ahead of time, so it will be fresh in their minds. I don't care how talented you are you must prepare for performance sometime. When I practice I am running over chord progressions in all the keys. True I don't know what a person might sing, but I personally feel more comfortable knowing I have spent at least an hour smoothing out progressions in a key. It helps keep me from stumbling. The biggest mistake most organ players make while playing is they PLAY TOO LOUD!
The greatest mistake most amateur musicians make is giving up.  Don't give up !!!
