In my opinion, it isn't possible to truly master the Hammond Organ, or music for that matter.  One can always learn new transitions, new runs, etc.

Jimmy Smith played the organ for decades before he passed and I don't believe he would have even considered himself to have mastered the organ.

Believing that you've mastered an instrument 100% is homologous to saying you know everything.  You'll just limit yourself from learning something new, or, better yet, creating something new.

(maestro: an artist of consummate skill; "a master of the violin"; "one of the old masters)

Im not sure what you meant by your question, but when I think of a master I think someone who is very skilled at their craft. I don't think that this word or phrase refers to some one who knows everything. I would consider Jimmy smith a master at the organ.

Do mean to ask who feels their are very skilled at the organ?

There are Masters.

As Jonesl78 said, Master doesn't refer to someone who knows everything.

There are many Masters out there.  I'm just a beginner trying to learn a chord here and there.   :D  :D  :D

Every thing said so far is true but I think that Reggie was really just interested in knowing what the musicians who are pretty proficient are most proud of

nobody answered that.

I have not mastered my instrument at all nor would i consider myself good but I like my left hand and foot coordination it is really coming along

They had kung fu masters and it just meant that they could really kick butt

they mastered the basics of their system
of course it doesent mean that they know everything but they know all the things they need to know to survive most battles

I think music is the same if you are a maestro you can play in every key
you can improvise well and you have a command of your instrument.

i think that people who walk around calling themselves beginners and they are true monsters are being overly humble

why not just say to God Be the Glory
Or I thank God every day for my talents

that way you arent making somebody feel stupid when they approach you and say wow you are really good are you are a monster and you say naw i dont know anything

what makes this sort of comment even more unnerving is when you see this same dude with the fake humility showing out over playing or looking for approval when he plays a service

then he turns around to you and say aw man i dont know anything i am just learning

I appreciate the attempt but be true to yourself

thanks To God Be the Glory

I kind of went off topic

I study with Charles minor and he is most proud of his ability to duplicate just about anybody and his wonderful ears that allow him to emulate and play such a huge variety of styles
To be or not to be that is the question you anwer when you pray practice and read your word

Man, I hate that too.  But do you know what I realized?  We may hear someone and think that they're great, but they see their weaknesses.  They may have awesome chords, but they can't make those baselines come alive in their left hand.  Or they have awesome chords, outstanding left hand baselines, but they don't know preacher chords in every key, etc, etc.

I've only been playing for 6 months, so If somebody's really hittin I'll ask 'em how long they've been playing, if they can show me something, etc.

I asked one guy how long he's been playing, and he's like: "I don't even know man."

I'm like: "APPROXIMATELY how long?"

Him: "Wow, I don't know."

 ::)

Nonsense.  Gospel Musicians can be some of the most annoying, selfish people you'll ever meet, and it's sad.

i know this has taken a big turn from the intent of the thread

but something else that is pretty crummy

when someone calls rhemselves teaching you  a song and they end up demonstrating their hottest licks and playing at such a pace it is nearly impossible to get.  and then you realize they just wanted to show off their licks not teach you they're  like if they get it good if not oh well At least I tried to help

especially if the learner tells them hey I dont hear that well or i cant get it instead of breaking it down they just play faster

I dont know if it is all about being selfish although i think that is part of it

I think some of it may be insecurity
since a lot of gospel musicians are self taught and may not really understand how they do what they do and how they got to the point where they are they are uncomfortable sharing

I have heard people play like monsters who have only been playing for 5 years

ear players tend to get good pretty fast I am a theory player and i am not a monster by any stretch of the imagination but i have some skills

Sometimes its embarrasing for me to say i have been playing for five years when someone who has been playing for 6 months can out play me

my ego may get in the way that is insecuriy

after all we are human but we need to tap in to the Compassion that is Christ and that will overshadow the ego and allow us to be forthright in our communication with other musicians

To be or not to be that is the question you anwer when you pray practice and read your word
