White Gospel?
« on: April 02, 2004, 11:55:23 PM »
Wat do u guys think of White Gospel? AkA Contemporaray christian music. I didnt give it that name. When I went to a gospel store, das what the seller told me. I personally love it. the words seem to be more powerful. In my church we sing that style of music now. I also noticed gospel artists doing songs such as We fall down (Donnie McClurkin) Above all(marvin Sapp), and Let It Rain(Paul Morton). dese songs are from Cont. Christian artists. Do u listen to it?

Personally....I don't like the name!! I think they should keep it just "Contemporary Christian"...that's just me though! I have seen some "Gospel" artists doin' some of those songs. Like Joe Pace, on one of his albums he does a song called "Love You So Much", that song is from Contemp Chris artist, Darlene Zchek-Hillsongs...

Peace.

As I was told, Music does not have color.  It's not a white thing or a black thing.  It's all about singing for the Lord Jesus Christ.

It's unfortunate that music by Christians is still characterized by the color of the folks that sing it- a sad commentary on the state of our country.

To answer your question, though, I love the music.  I agree that often the lyrics are a bit more profound, which is actually what drew me to it in the first place.  In addition, there are no "Black Gospel" FM radio stations in my area, while there are numerous CCM stations on the FM dial.  I prefer FM to AM because of sound quality.

Contemporary Christian Music and Gospel Music

From a brother whose children are "multiracial"...and has played and sang with various church settings... I must say "we" shout with the Gospel, Praise with the "Contemporary", Rock with the those who Rock, harmonize with accappella, Twang with a touch of Country and even love classical moments in Catholic/Methodists/Lutheran circles.  The Bible says, Let everything that hath breath praise ye the Lord.  It doesn't say, if it has this certain beat or rhythm...just praise ye the Lord.
There's only one caveat...you gotta know what the trumpeter is "saying or playing" to know if it's God.  (Exodus 19 & 20; Lev 25:9; 1Co 14:8  For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?)

I do believe that music is given a certain genre, such as black gospel, white gospel, contemporary, or whatever title gven to it, simplybecause there needs to be a filing stystem (so to speak). Things have to be organized in the business industry. You wouldn't want to look through the whole library, just to find a mystery book.  I don't want to go through sections and sections just to find my traditional gospel.   There is a difference in all styles of music. But, all of it is good.  No need to get bent out of shape because of the color of the person who does it.  Or should I say, the title of the little card posted above the CD's. We may all have our personal favorite genre, but most people can get with whatever.

To add on, isn't it wonderful that musicians are influenced by all types of music? For instance, I really like the guitar parts and folksy gospel music of groups like "Big Tent Revival." I also like the southern style songs of singers like Dottie Rambo and I really like "He is Jehovah, the God that Healeth thee." by Betty Jean Robinson.

If you haven't heard the Katinas, treat yourself to one of their CD's. They are a group of young saints from Samoa, who can SANG. No not sing, they can SANG.

Then I like the gospel jazz recordings of Ben Tankard, and Micheal Smith has a CD out that is all gospel instrumental music, but is inspired by the Scottish / Welsch folk music.

So music is from God, all of it. The enemy stole it, but it was created to serve God. I think when some people say "Black" music, they are talking about our style of playing on the pentatonic scale and throwing in a lot of major sevenths and eleventh chords, which gives Black gospel a unique flavor. But the other gospel music styles are great . . . give it a try; ya might learn sump'in! And nothing is better than a well-rounded musician that can play for gospel services and then take that same anointing to more traditional services.
