I sight sing also, but it is required when your a music major. You get tested on it every semester in choir because we got to read music on the spot and then have it together in like 20 minutes.

I have just began to learn about time  that I have been want to learn and the more I go to sundayschool the better that i'm going to be and be able to praise the lord like I want to,  and that I have to learn to direct the choir is something that I have never done before ,but I going to do my very best at it and praise the lord , because our piano said that the lord lead him to pick me to direct the choir.

Wow...my hero.  How did you learn.

wow, thanks.  i once was a music major and like 2Klub, had to learn.  it's pretty easy to sight sing (read music) if you would just learn throught steps.
first, i learned all of the parts of a staff (clefs, time signature, key signature, bar lines, and measure) after i learned all of that i learned how count rhythm within each measure. the last thing i learned was the different intervals (if you can play by ear, you can learn this).  if you can play by ear, you can learn to read music.

Sight singing refers to the ability to sing a pitch that you're looking at on a piece of sheet music.
Despite our communication technology, no invention is as effective as the sound of the human voice.

Sight Singing seems so much harder than Sight Reading because you have to have control over your vocal chords, an dnot just hit a note.

I am a sight singer.  In my high school chior that is a big part of wut we do.  At our state choral competition they have a section on how well your chior can sight read.  As a classical performer sight singing is a big part of scholarship and college auditions.

Oh Yes... I remember those days of state competition to where you had to sightread a piece that you have never done before. I LOVED IT!!!!  Bishop Cole

I've sight read for the last 15 years. The one thing about sightreading is that you have to practice.. practice..practice!

AS A MUSIC MAJOR IN COLLEGE...IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO LEARN HOW TO SIGHT SING OR SIGHT READ AS WE CALL IT. I PLAY THE PIANO ORGAN AND EVEN THE TUBA. I LEARN HOW TOW PLAY BY LEARNING HOW TO SIGHT READ. I THINK THAT AS GOSPEL MUSICIANS...WE SHOULD TAKE OUT THE TIME TO LEARN THE CRAFT OF READING MUSIC AND I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT CHORD SHEETS ALTHOUGH I DO USE THEM WHEN I DONT HAVE THE ACTUAL MUSIC. IT IS MUCH MORE CHALLENGING.

I can sight sing simple stuff. It's an amazing technique. I've watched a M.OM. write out a whole song while listening to a CD in the car ;with no piano!!!

If you have perfect pitch you can just read the notes and sing it. Other wise people get used to hear the different interval. So no matter what key you are in all you need is the opening key.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

I'm one of those who can sing on sight - I spent most of the day last weekend transcribing a song off YouTube, and was recording some parts for our choir's Christmas Cantata....

As that being one of my goals as a singer along with learning how to play, that would be great topic for someone very experienced and patient to teach here on LGM.....hint...hint..... ;D
