anybody ever got rebuked in service for play to loud

In church almost every sunday, when my father is playing guitar it is sometimes loud but it doesn't
sound like garbage. a few weeks back we went to a church because my mother had to preach. My father was playin a fender stratocaster out of a Roland jc-90. I was playin keyboard out of a small peavey amp. he was so loud, I couldn't even here myself.

mt_spiffy: you just spoke prophetically into my situation!!! I always have the treble waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy up!!! It sounds good from the back of it or the sides, but in front, it was terrible! I never really gave it any thought on the dynamics of it all.

Position yourself and the amp so that the speakers are firing right at your ears.  If your amp isnt miced you'll also want to be sure it's set so that the other musicians and congregation can hear as well.  But THEN set your EQ, with the speakers pointing right at you.  Especially if you do mic the amp, this will drastically improve your tone.  If you're like me, it still has a lot of treble.

EQ settings are important.  Having said that, don't be too stingey with the mids when playing live.  I like a fairly bright tone, but having enough mids in your EQ is essential to good tone.

Well, I'm a keyboardist...tyrna play a lil organ...and I wouldn't use the word rebuke, but every variation close to it..I've had! lol, I don't hear it as much, but that's only because I've learned to feel and be more mindful of the older saints..plus, if the people can't hear the words or people talkin...if u playin and u can't hear it, well then turn it down!  lol...it took me a lil while to learn that..but i got there...and sometimes I still need to be reminded!

A few years back I started playing in a church with choir members who were not happy at all to have me there. I was playing acoustic and had a rack with preamp, tuner, etc. in it. The rack had no amp or speakers - it ran to the PA via XLR. I put the rack next to the choir.

After the first song in rehearsal, one of the choir members spoke up and in a really snotty voice said that the guitar was way too loud with that "thing" (the rack) so close to the choir.

So I moved the rack maybe 15 feet away, but made no changes to my levels. After the next song I asked him if it was any better. He said (again in a snotty voice) "Yes. MUCH."

 My old pastor kept telling me to turn mine down,it got to the point where I couldn't hear myself play. So I didn't,now my new pastor tells me stuff I love to hear like "You need to turn it up more!" and "You need more distortion added!" It's great to have a pastor who also has a music degree!
