Fingering: Diminished scale
« on: December 23, 2005, 10:45:32 PM »
This is partially related to another post.

Here is the fingering for the diminished scales...

Right hand:
1. When starting on a black key, use the 2nd or 3rd finger.
2. When starting on a white key, use the 1st finger.

Examples....

E (1), G (2), Bb (3), Db (4) *repeat going up*
Ab (2), B (1), D (2), F (3), Ab (4) *repeat fingers 1-4 going up*
Eb (2), Gb (3), A (1), C (2), Eb (3), Gb (4)

...basically, your thumb will always land on a white key.

The left hand is a little trickier...

Here are some examples....

E (5), G (4), Bb (3), Db (2), E (1),  *then use fingers 4-1 going up*
Ab (2), B (1), D (4), F (3), Ab (2), B (1)
Eb (3), Gb (2), A (1), C (4), Eb (3), Gb (2), A (1)

Are there riffs you can play with diminshed scales and can you only use them over diminished chords, Can you post some examples of how they are used in Gospel music and maybe Jazz, Thank You very much for your excellent posts.

B3wannabe,

Could you please give some examples of where the diminished scale is used in gospel music. Can you provide some examples of songs?
