Terry went to my dad's church in Las Vegas....Mountain Top Faith Ministries...Clinton House (pastor).  I always thought he was a good drummer.  My dad said he was touring, but didn't know the name of the group.

There's always somebody bettter than you, look @ Ricky Lawson, to the average young drummer caught up with flashy chops every 8 bars, he's wack, but to veterans he's a legend, playing poised & he has wonderful pocket, as John Blackwell said, when playing for Cameo back in the day, he was doing all kind of fast chops & they FIRED HIM, Listening & Pocket will always outlast fast chops

So let me get this straight bbd.  You didn’t like Terry cuz he didn’t affect you like Chris & Stokley? OK…what else were you expecting from him other than doin his job?  Besides, dude got the gig. I think we all should remember that when we decide to criticize (pass judgment on), What are we doing? Where are we going?  Where are we at? Point being, Terry must be doing something right, he has the gig.  Although I respect your comment,(U like who U like..) but to say he played like a punk is a very strong statement.

I wonder when Terry was blessed with that gig , I wonder if God thought he played like a punk?  You mentioned 3 different kats.  And let’s not forget, a younger Chris spent a lot of time with Stokley.  It’s comments like these that makes me wonder about the hearts, minds, & spirits of some Gospel Drummers…Drummers period. :?  :?

I feel you on those much needed comments!  I hate to other drummers hate on one another instead of listening and appreciating someone else excelling at our craft, love and passion.  Since being in LA for 3 months I hear a lot of that coming form church drummers.  The cats can play and have licks for days but they are not playing with no one but always talking about "blazing" someone.  I am blessed tp play with Nisan Stewart, Chris Johnson, Jubu Smith, Ethan Farmer & Damien Farmer, Gerald Haddon etc...and none of these cats have that mentality.  They appreciate other performaers and give credit where it is do and do not mind taking the time out to chill with the new cats on the scene out here like my-self.

We have continue remembering we are all given talents and gives, how we use and apply them is on us and do not hate on those that are in "their season" to be dong there thing.  Theses cats that are being talked about on these gigs for a reason; they deserve to be there because they paid their dues and was appointed to be their by whomever the MD is and by God!

Personally, I feel Terry has a lot more to say…..juz u wait N c

First off Butter or Butta whatever you call youself, I loved your comment "It’s comments like these that makes me wonder about the hearts, minds, & spirits of some Gospel Drummers…Drummers period. :?  :? " You are way worse for taking upon yourself to take the place of GOD and judge me for an opion I had in a CHAT ROOM!

And to answer your question NO I didnt like what I saw from Terry cause it WAS weak!!!!! Ive been a fan from the Pretty Brown Eyes to Sad Girl!!!!I have BET live to boot legs, EVERYONE knows mint condition is about the music and the drums!

Every drummer they had live killed it! Chris was not always there...Hmmmm how can I put it so you can understand? With him on drums its like the band went from driving a Hummer H2 to driving a GMC something..Ok not that bad but you get the point!

Please be leavin the judging to God and respect the opinons of others! I know if I asked your Mama if you smelt clean shed say NO!!!!! :(

Calm down bbd. 1st off,  I may need to ask your mom to give you a hug.  I said I respect your comment dude.  If you read my post thoroughly you’ll see that.   I’m 1st in line for a Brotha speaking his mind the way he sees fit. And I ain’t mad at’cha….. I was speaking of context being a Gospel related board.  (“Like a punk“, referring to his playing , in my opinion, it was a lil strong.  Although your boldness for saying it is definitely respected. We need more soldiers like yourself (There, hope that makes it a lil better for you 8) ) If we were on the street or club, who knows, I might have concurred.   I’m Mint fan to.

And  judging  you? Where dude?  I said “wonder” God “knows” our hearts, minds & spirits.
This may be your way of telling Terry he needs to up his game? I don’t know, I can only wonder but God knows your heart, I don’t.   I’m entitled to my thoughts & opinions to.  I never said “you shouldn’t have made the comment” or “I’m goin to have it deleted“. Ol people do stuff like that.

Get off Of Terry Wesley!!!!!!!
« Reply #34 on: February 10, 2006, 10:54:38 AM »
For those who don't know Terry Wesley, he's a church drummer straight out of Las Vegas, Nevada and has been the back up drummer for Mint Condition for about three years now. What you guys fail to understand and didn't mention is that Chris "Daddy" Dave plays  the studio tracks on Mints albums. But, Stokely does some tracks as well he's more vocals, keys and steel drums. As a matter of fact, Vater just signed Chris Dave for a endorsement on sticks and that was in the year of 2005, earlier in the year. But, everyone has their own opinion about certain things like what they think about the next person. Yah, might even say that I suck as a drummer and I need to practice more but, just as long as I get calls to go on tour iI won't change alot in my playing. Oh, and how do i know Terry? I played at his church in Vegas when i was on tour with the Occidental Inspirational Voices in 2004. But, get back at me and let me know what you guys think about everything now. Oh, and you should have seen the show at Valut 360 club in Long Beach. WOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Terry wesley is a skilled trained musician and is doing what a true professinal does doing the job. Even Mint Condition gig has requirements and that is most likely to serve the music first and when the opportunity arises put your flava on it. There are a lot of skilled people out there all at at different levels and they all get the job done at those respective levels in most cases. I mean like Steve Jordan is as different from Steve Ferrone who is different from Steve Gadd, dennis Chambers to Ringo or Charlie Watts and from the simplest to the most complex they all do their thing. Anther example if you don't get it is, I pyed for randy brecker of The Brecker Bros. and i am be no means dennis Chambers or Petwer Erskine but I got hired for a reason. I did what asked and it was appreciated and respected. You know what they say about opinions...Everybody has one and ...anyway this I my view but I will add I respect the rights of those to voice their opinion but  this supposedly isn't the place where we should be so judgemental. It's Learn Gospel Music. I think we are all blessed with some amzing talent so let's just share it and thank god for our blessings.

Welcome to LGM.

Most of us have already covered the facts of Stokley doing tracks (the original drummer), Chris Dave working stage and studio (*since Diary of A Band), his Vater endorsement etc.

Yes, opinions do fly around hear.... lots of youth and growing wisdom.

It's seems that there is another working drummer (you) in the ranks that can hopefully share som professional experiences.  I hope to learn something from you.

Search previous posts and enjoy.

I think everyone's point is well taken.  Whenever a group/band/choir comes out for the first time whether it's a new, CD, DVD, concert or whatever, we always have lasting impressions of what we saw first.  It's very hard to get over that.  Just as in life, first impressions are lasting.  I'll just run down a list of comparisions.

1.  Gerald Heyward on Hezekiah's "I"ll Make It" from 1986.  If Hez does 10 more CDs the drummers will always be compared to him no matter how good they are in their own regard, ie. Jeff Lesley, Jason Hendrickson.
2.  The Yellowjackets with Will Kennedy.  Marcus Baylor is good, BUT his style is different.  Does that mean he's not a good drummer, NO.
3.  Chick Corea's Electric Band with Dave Weckyl.  When Gary Novak came in, all I could think was, "He aint good like Dave".  But the fact was, he is a really good drummer.
4.  Milton Brunson and Thompson Community when they had Darius Brooks, Percy Bady, Richard Gibbs, Steve Huff, Al Willis, and Kevin Brunson.  To me that was the best choir band in the 80's and 90's.  When Milton came to DC and those guys weren't playing, it was like the whole concert was a let down.  But again, the guys they had filling in were good also.  Just not what we were used to.
5.  On Commissioned's recent Reunion DVD, they had Marvin McQuitty and Michael Williams playing.  Now, I know a lot of younger guys may think Marvin is off the chain, he is, but that's because you didn't see Michael playing in 1985-1992 when Commissioned was the hottest thing out and he was in his prime.

I think we forget that drummers eventually outlive their prime.  It doesn't mean they can't play, it just means their playing has changed.  Steve Gadd is a great player, but he is past his prime.

It's very rare that musicians, singers, etc. that come in after the originals supercede their popularity and notoreity.  Whether or not those coming after are in fact better musicians.

We all have our favorites and opinions, but if we continue to negate what someone is currently doing based on the past, we will miss out on a lot.

The same can be said about preachers:  Who's the Best?  Is it TD Jakes, Noel Jones, Eddie Long, Creflo Dollar, Myles Monroe, Jamaal Harrison Bryant.  Get my point?  They're all good in their own right.
