I think everyone's point is well taken. Whenever a group/band/choir comes out for the first time whether it's a new, CD, DVD, concert or whatever, we always have lasting impressions of what we saw first. It's very hard to get over that. Just as in life, first impressions are lasting. I'll just run down a list of comparisions.
1. Gerald Heyward on Hezekiah's "I"ll Make It" from 1986. If Hez does 10 more CDs the drummers will always be compared to him no matter how good they are in their own regard, ie. Jeff Lesley, Jason Hendrickson.
2. The Yellowjackets with Will Kennedy. Marcus Baylor is good, BUT his style is different. Does that mean he's not a good drummer, NO.
3. Chick Corea's Electric Band with Dave Weckyl. When Gary Novak came in, all I could think was, "He aint good like Dave". But the fact was, he is a really good drummer.
4. Milton Brunson and Thompson Community when they had Darius Brooks, Percy Bady, Richard Gibbs, Steve Huff, Al Willis, and Kevin Brunson. To me that was the best choir band in the 80's and 90's. When Milton came to DC and those guys weren't playing, it was like the whole concert was a let down. But again, the guys they had filling in were good also. Just not what we were used to.
5. On Commissioned's recent Reunion DVD, they had Marvin McQuitty and Michael Williams playing. Now, I know a lot of younger guys may think Marvin is off the chain, he is, but that's because you didn't see Michael playing in 1985-1992 when Commissioned was the hottest thing out and he was in his prime.
I think we forget that drummers eventually outlive their prime. It doesn't mean they can't play, it just means their playing has changed. Steve Gadd is a great player, but he is past his prime.
It's very rare that musicians, singers, etc. that come in after the originals supercede their popularity and notoreity. Whether or not those coming after are in fact better musicians.
We all have our favorites and opinions, but if we continue to negate what someone is currently doing based on the past, we will miss out on a lot.
The same can be said about preachers: Who's the Best? Is it TD Jakes, Noel Jones, Eddie Long, Creflo Dollar, Myles Monroe, Jamaal Harrison Bryant. Get my point? They're all good in their own right.
