How do you know chords within the melody?
« on: December 16, 2005, 08:35:18 PM »
What I am trying to learn and find out is what chords go with the melody notes. If I know a song and the key and can play the melody how will I know what chords to play with the melody notes.

Example from my Jazz book:

Silent Night in the key of C.

First 4 notes are.....G-A-G-E
For the first note G they are playing a Cmaj7 then A-G single notes but then on the next note E it is a B-7. How do you know that that sigle note of E will be a B-7 and so on throughout a song. I want to learn how to apply chords to single notes of the melody and don't know where to begin. Can someone please help?

Cool, I have been teaching some of the kids at church how to play this song. As I have mentioned before if you know all the inversions of the 1, 4 & 5 in the key of C you can play anything

C D E F G A B
1 2  3 4 5 6 7
*        * *

So if you know all the inversions of the C

CEG
GCE
EGC

FAC
CFA
ACF

GBD
DGB
BDG

just look at what your melody is and pick which ever inversion has that note on top or farthest to the right...

Example here is the melody...

Si - i - lent    night
 G   A    G       E

Now pick the chords with this melody on top then use the process of elimination and you get this

CEG   CFA  CEG    GCE
Si    -    i  -  lent     night

Hope that helps...
God Bless you,
jayzee

Also,

I bought the Gospel Keys 101 way back in the day and, that is exactly what it addresses and Jermaine does a really good job of taking his time in doing so. You may consider picking that up if you don't  have it already....

I agree; the video will teach you how to do this rather well and if u get the 300 page book it even goes deeper as to tell you how and when to use chord substitutions such as sevenths, ninths, and 13ths.

For 100 dollars u can have them both. Very well worth it. You will have around 3 months of study material if you go over it a lesson a week once u get past the first few.

I suggest it, it has worked wonders for me.
