need a little help playing praise songs
« on: April 30, 2005, 11:08:16 PM »
I 'm having a little trouble with praise songs like, Glory, Glory, We are soldiers in the army, Bye And Bye ect. What are the chord progression do you follow when playing these songs. I want to stay away from the melody
and accompany. Thanks

I don't think you can have it both ways, Eman. You're either playing the melody or the accompianment (pretty sure, I spelled that wrong).

As for the answer to your question, I think folks have been saying that playing the 1-4-5 chord prgression will get you through most of those congregational songs (Glory, Glory; Bless that wonderful name; etc.)

Hope that helps.

1-4-5 Chords

This is true! The 1-4-5 chords will get you thorough most of the congregational songs, but it can get boring. I usally spice it up by mixing my bass notes. Jazz them up a bit.

Really?

You know, I think that's been my problem. When I read music and play, I'm playing the chords and the melody. So, when I attempt to play a song by ear, I still attempt to play both the accompaniment and the melody.

I was looking at a lead sheet site, and it was loaded with lead sheets that had only chords.

Now, I'm not playing for a choir and since I'm a new player, I don't see this happening in the near future either. But, when do we play what?

For instance, sometimes I play chords in the right hand, and a single bass note or octave in the right (Hey, I said I was a beginner, didn't I), or I play the chords in the left and the melody (single note or octave for now) in the right.

Needless to say, this is boring as dust. But, hey I'm beaming because at least the song is recognizable.

I think somehow I've become lost in the middle. Is anyone able to follow this stream of thought. I apologize if you're not, because I think I've even confused myself.

Also key-wiz, I chorded out "Your name is Jesus" and posted it in Gospel Keyboard.  Do you think you could look at it and help me out with it?  I need some more advanced chords and stuff.

Listen, my man you're doing about as well as I am doing. Knowing when to play what, for me, can be complicated so I try to think of it like this...When I'm playing by myself (which is ALL the time, I don't play for a choir either) I try to keep the melody in the top note of my right hand.

Now, when I'm just trying to play various chords or progressions I'm trying to let my hands go and play various things in various ways (i.e. inversions, licks, runs, etc).

Please, please, PLEASE remember, I'm learning it at the same time you are. There are some more advanced things that I'm able to pick up and incorporate, but I'm by no means ready to play with or for anyone. At best, I can play some "slight" mood music before....REHEARSAL!  :D

Be Blessed
