Importance of Intervals?
« on: February 22, 2013, 10:17:55 PM »
What is the importance of intervals.  It seems they are barely mentioned in the music theory collection; but now I'm hearing all this stuff about learning them.  In this video it is suggested that all we need to learn & memorize is 12 intervals to begin picking up songs
Music Theory & Ear Training: Learn to Play Songs by Ear!
What are those 12 intervals?  It seems like there are so many.  How can you narrow it down.  How do intervals really relate to picking up a song & chords by ear?  Well, more specifically, how does it help to name a progression...

Also, how do you identify the major vs minor vs perfect intervals.  Do they have a "sound".  Why are they named major, minor and perfect?  Does perfect have a more pristine sound??  Does minor have a minor sound--- you know, that down tone that minor chords have.  And lastly, do major intervals have that major-ish sound--> just the straight forward sound.  How do you really recognize them b/c right now alot of them sound the same to me.   Thanks guys!
