What are things that every man should know how to do?
« on: September 17, 2011, 08:00:29 AM »
I've been tasked starting a young men's ministry at my church (middle school to college age), and I'm trying to come up a list of things that ALL men should know how to do.  For example, change a tire, wash your own clothes, cook SOMETHING, balance a checkbook, etc.  I want this ministry to be more than meeting once a month, asking them how things are at school and home, playing some games, and sending them back home.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance!!!

They should learn how to take care of children: change diapers, hold a baby, feed the baby, etc.

They should know how to conduct themselves based on the relationship in which they are engaged. For example, how you act around your boys is not how you act around your boss or around your girlfriend/wife.  Know how to code switch.
Despite our communication technology, no invention is as effective as the sound of the human voice.

Good stuff!  C.A.D. (Chivarly Ain't Dead) will be part of this as well.

The parts in bold are gold.  Cutting the yard is a sore spot for me. I know how to do BUT I HATE it.

I've gone this far in my life without knowing how to fish--I don't find it to be that deep.  But, I'm also from the city ain't too many ponds around.  :D

Ray and SJon, I'm gonna pray for ya'll and this fishing thing  lol!

I LOVE to fish!  I just rarely get to go.

I appreciate you guys' input.  The tie thing is on point.  I take it for granted that I know how to, but it is now on the list.

Commit (seems abstract, but if a guy has a commitment issue in one area it'll spread to others)
Start and use a grill
Light maintenance on a car (changing lights, , jumping, ) or diagnosis

Speaking of maintenance, all men need to know how to use some tools.  There are probably some grown men that if you asked them for an Allen wrench they would ask you, "who's Allen?"

I agree with the second part of Jonathan's list and I agree with RayJ's list.

From a woman's perspective, I would add that every man should know how to treat a lady (again, CAD :)):

-open her door to let her in and out of the car
-open doors at stores, restaurants, etc.
-extend your elbow for her to grab when walking, esp down stairs or off a curb
-offer your jacket if she's cold
-throw your jacket over a puddle so she can walk acr-- ok, ok, just kidding :D
-pull her chair at a restaurant
-help her with her coat: on/off
-carry her bags. ALWAYS.

Granted, many woman aren't into chivalry or only want it to a certain extent. Men should still know how to offer these things in case it means something to her. And if nothing else, treat your mama like a lady.

Other stuff:
-follow instructions for "some assembly required" stuff
-use a charcoal grill
-buy a car
-drive stick shift
-read a map (even if the days of GPS)
-iron your shirt, but NOT your black pants :)
-buy good gifts for your lady
-shave
-buy a suit
-throw a punch (hey, you never know)
-calculate square footage
-use Google
-play Spades. Or Poker. Or pool. Or something.
-be committed to everything you do
-WORK ETHIC (be on time, leave on time, do what you're supposed to do, follow rules, don't be a rebel, don't quit when they get on your nerves, etc.)
-be faithful (to your woman, to your family, your church, your boss, etc.)
-eat in public
-how to cut meat (I don't know why parents stopped teaching that)
-make up a bed
-use basic tools

When you're in love you don't want to fall asleep bc reality is finally better than your dreams.

Ok while I was typing, you guys said some of what I was saying. Didn't mean to be redundant.

I agree with CSE and FP. ;D

Also, every man should know the basic rules of hygiene and grooming: shower as often as necessary, at least once a day. Use deodorant every time you shower. Use moisturizer: ashy is not sexy. Get regular haircuts, shape-ups, line-ups, whatever. Keep the ears and neck clean and the teeth brushed and the nose hairs trimmed. It all sounds like it goes without saying, but..... it doesn't. :-\

Ohhhhhh and one of my MAJOR pet peeves. I cannot stand to see a man wearing a white dress shirt and no t-shirt underneath or a colored t-shirt or one with writing or pictures. SMH. PLEEEEEASE teach them that.

Agreed. (except the musical instrument part).

Very good list. Every man should know how to earn money aside from his day job.

I just want to clarify my "be faithful" point. I didn't mean teach them to be faithful. That goes without saying. I meant teach them HOW to be faithful. Give them practical lessons for avoiding temptation and teach them what to do in certain situations and how to handle certain temptations.

-iron your shirt, but NOT your black pants :)
You iron them inside out.  :) If you want a crease you can put a sheet over it and iron on steam. ;D
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.
