How much should a musician be paid??????
« on: June 16, 2009, 04:40:48 PM »
Got an interesting question the other day about the pay of a musician and how it relates to being thrown bread
crumbs for hard work, and having to deal with attitudes from the pastor and his choir members. He has musicians rehearsal and choir rehearsal, plays Sundays of course, and often second services. I stress often because it seems every sunday the brotha is gone to another engagement. And for all his trouble, a $40.00 check. He practices and is a very great musician but i feel that he is strongly discouraged for the way he is being treated, what do you think? I know that money is not the issue, but you have to show that your appreciated and 40 bucks just is an insult to someone who prepares so hard. I need so help on this one, I don't know what to say. Advice????

However much the church offers, or however much he/she demands. If they cant agree, then maybe the musician needs to be somewhere else.

That's $40 more than what I get but I won't get started. Do a search on it. I'm sure you'll find lots and lots (and lots) of threads on the subject.

a. No, it's not interesting as we here @ LGM have discussed this subject ad nauseam  ::) :-\

b. Why, in EVERY initial post in EVERY thread about this tired topic, does that sentence arise? If one KNOWS it isn't about the money or it ISN'T the issue, the thread would NEVER have been created.  ?/? :-\

One of LGM's top ten favorite subjects :D

c. Sadly, you're correct.

However much the church offers, or however much he/she demands. If they cant agree, then maybe the musician needs to be somewhere else.

d. Especially if you "know" it's not about the money. Either play or bounce, they're the ONLY two options.

Well, lets put it this way, if you do a job, and dedicate your life to the task and do it effectively then why not get paid for it???? Sure you are working for the Lord but the truth is, lets all be honest, we all could use a little blessing. Money is the way you are compensated in most instances and truth be told Worship leaders are just as important as the Minister preaching. In my personal thoughts I would think that if the church is growing and faithfulness on the musician is there I would give that person a raise wouldn't you? Everyone wants to be commended for there work, now I'm not saying a large sum of money but what I am saying is bless them in a way that the feel like what the do means something.

Many say your reward is in heaven, but truthfully you still have to live in this world even though were not of it. It is sickning that people say money is not important in the church and brush over the subject, knowing full well that some need that blessing just to make it. (Or was I the only one in that position at one time)??
Truth is you want to be commended, and I feel that if the church can do better, which in this case they can, they should be more of a blessing, and quit shuttling coins at people who dedicate there time and energy to the ministry. If any of my comments seem selfish I am deeply sorry, but lets quit beating around the bush and talk about it. Musicians have a job to do and for there work there should be compensated accordingly.

a. Let's stop trying to compare what one does for their church to what one does for their secular job. In fact, my secular job is how I get paid and pay my bills.  ;) 8) You do know that Paul was a tent maker WHILE preaching the gospel, right? Besides, who are you, The Joker?  :D ::) :D If you haven't seen The Dark Knight, you won't get that last line. Go see it.

b. Trust and believe that this particular topic is not beaten around the bush, but it IS beating a dead horse. As was stated, there are only two options, ask for more money BEFORE you start playing or go play for someone else. That's really it.

c. Truth is YOU want to be commended, don't try to put that on anyone else.  ;)

I fully understand you know that's a good way to put it, thanks for all the help I agree 110% with you. I talked to Terrance today and he seemed they were making significant progress. Now I will say this: The reason for this post was because I can not stand seeing my fellow musicians treated unjustly. The church is suppose to be a place of Worship, not a club to run to a get paid for playing music, but let us not forget it was the CHURCH that persecuted Jesus, and I assure you in the present day they will do the same if you let them. You Have to know who you are and whose you are!!!! Thank you all for challenging my faith in this, I have come into a real understanding of this interesting topic. Thanks you

...sounds like musician's getting burned out - perhaps a solution would be to not take the money, and do LESS - get other musicians to take up some of the slack...

Its definitely not about the money.

I'm going to start playing for this small church in a few months, I told the pastor I really don't want any money...but she insists on paying $150/sunday.

She said she understands me, but she really thinks the musician (only one, small church like i said) should be blessed by giving as well.

I probably will take it, but put a good 2/3 back in church without her knowing lol.

I just want to learn.
