I just want to know????
« on: January 20, 2009, 01:41:59 AM »
Just one question:
When playing a church organ, is it true that most comtemperary music is not keyed to the organ?? i guess im talking about the Hammonds.

I was told by a musician one day at chior rehersal,  that i would either have to go up, or down, but could not sing the song, in it's actuall key, as it played in the cd player we were listening too, while familierizing ourselves with a new song to practice for sunday service. Not only my song, but two other songs by other chior members. It was a lil frustrating, cause i practiced the song in it's origonal key, and it was a duet, and now we both had to sing lower than what we had practiced.

I've never had this happen to me before, and i have sang with other musicians, who after listening to a song, they just went ahead and played it.Could this be this musicians week spot?? Or is he just use to the old school keys of E, C, and G??

Somebody please bring me some clarity.

"keyed to the organ"

That makes no sense. Your musician probaly couldnt play in that key, so he tried to make you guys move up or down to suit him. That is totaly backwards.

I agree with the others. That makes no sense whatsoever. Like U13 said, he was probably trying to jive you guys.  :-\

Get that brother a digital organ and show him the transpose button.

When he says 'keyed to the organ', maybe he is talking about instrumental wise.  You know how todays contemporary music have about 20 different instruments in it so when you play it on Sunday, it doesn't eactly sound like the CD.

No because he specifically said that they have to sing the song in a lower key, implying that the organist has to change the key.

I would prefer as well to always make the song your own. You don't necessarily have to always sound like the cd. Remember that it takes a lot of hard work to get everything done correctly.

I believe you should go to the music (in the right spirit) and talk to them about your situation. It would help ease that tension.

One thing I know what lacks in some musicians is commnication and not enough practice together.

Yes this is right. Our band in church would be much better if we just practiced together.

Thats gonna be kinda hard to do. The whole problem is that the musician is not skilled enough in that key. Musicians dont take criticism like that very well. They are artist, and they are sensitive about thier ...um stuff :D

it's not the problem of making it my own, it was the problem of now doing a duet with someone that you practiced with, and now the musician changes the key.i always tell anyone who sings a solo, that you have to make it your own, and to block out how you heard it, learn the words, and do it as if you wrote it, and do it from the heart, and always take it to prayer first.

true, i don't know any musician that takes criticism well, again i'm not trying to knock the brother, but my heart was just screaming, thats not right. Plus i look at it this way: he is our New Minister of music.
i also know that there are alot of singers that only have sung in church, and not had any theroy, or musical training at all.
I do have a musical back ground, i just don't throw it in anyones face.
Eventually, i know i will direct a chior, i feel it. I was trained by my high school band director to come back and take his job as the Director of Music for my high school after college, but sometimes we do stupid things when we are young(thats another story) anywho i didn't take it, but i say that to say, my ears have been trained well, i think that only a few of my brotheren, and my wife know it.Like i said i'm not trying to show anyone up.I just had to question what i was told in a rehersal, just to get my mind right. The song?? it sounded ok, but i did it not come from my heart, we just got it done not to disrupt service, cause the person i did the duet with has been asking for months, and then this happends, so i'm just trying to support her, and keep peace because she was begining to become doutful of her own skill, and aking :why isnt he letting me do a song, but all the while saying he wants new soloist to step up, and not the regulars(every church has them). We just know our limitations now.
I'll continue to pray for more unity within our choirs, and with our new Minister of music.
thank you all for your thoughts and comments, and again, i'm not trying to put anyone down at all.
Be blessed everyone, and let's enjoy this great day in history..

Careful on how you word that.

For what? I meant that exactly how I said it.  Musicians are supposed to be there to assist, that means follow the singer.
