Start with a male to female xlr adapter
Unscrew and remove the female side of the adapter and unsolder leads.
Solder R2 between xlr pin 2 and 3.
Solder R1 and R3 on xlr pin 2 and 3
Reconnect leads to R1 and R3 of their previous pins.
Shove everything back into the barrel, replace screw, test it out and your done.

Resistors $3.50(radio shack)
Total around $9
Cheapest commercially made 10db and 20db pads around $24 with shipping.

*bonus the DIY T-pad circuit is calculated to the actual input impedance of your specific preamp unlike store bought versions meaning amount of attenuation is more precise.
