Not sure if this has been posted, but this is the reason why he will always be one of my favourite drummers.

It was an ok clip. IMHO whenever I see clips of Gerald it seems like he plays a lot the same grooves, does the same stick tricks and the same fills/licks. I'm not trying to hate, its just what i see!

Let's break down the obvious. He does this because he wants to attract attention from people who aren't familiar with him, otherwise he'd look just like you! For a typical viewer (non-drummer) , it's really impressive for a drummer to play very well and have some cool tricks up their sleeve to add. It leaves a lasting impression.

So expect to see drummers continue to do what they do well. I.E..Eric Moore...

Did Gerald hit his peak back in 1993/4? I thought he was a lot better during the era when he recorded that classic with James Hall.

Had 2 jump in on this one. I have not nor will i ever diss anybody on here that's not my thing. But 2 say Gerald sounds like this person or that person is crazy. Dude has been playing like that 4 the last 20 something years. Dude is a gospel legend and i say that because the influence he's had on cats 4 years. major cats!!! He changed alot of how gospel WAS being played at the time. And 4 those who say he sounds the same and maybe he do, that sound has kept him working 4 twenty something years straight. Has anybody ever remember him not working? That's him and that's his sound. Like i said i'm not here dissing anybody, or start anything. Just giving alil history. And he goes back way b4 James Hall. U gotta go back to Hez Walker 1st two records and old Timothy Wright joint that might not be in circulation anymore. Dude be around 4 a min.

Just my 2 cents.  Gerald is nearly 40 years old.  I've been listening to him since 1986 when I was sixteen so that makes me 38.  I hear all of the comments and people are entitled to make their comments.  At this point in his career, is some of his playing, chops, and fills predictable, yes.  Is it not as exciting as some of today's top cats, perhaps, yes again.  That still does not negate what this man means to gospel and R&B music.  The names Gerald Heyward, Jeff Davis, Dana Davis, Kevin Brunson, Michael Williams, and Joel Smith will still be in conversations 20 years from now for their impact on gospel music.  You can't expect him to sound like today's musicians.  He was brought up, groomed, and trained in a different era.  It's not to say that he can't adapt and do a few new things, but he's from a different era.  I dare say, Gerald can still outplay the majority of folks in this forum.  Whether you're from the east coast, west coast, north or south, Gerald has influenced gospel and R&B music.  Even if you claim, as some have, to never have even heard of him, he has influenced your playing.  If he's so boring and outplayed, put your video on here and let's see you play.

Nobody is trying to take away from the fact that Gerald has contributed to Gospel and R&B music in such a big way! And yes, what Gerald decides to play is his signature, yes! BUT! Why can't he adapt? Whats wrong with adapting? Or better yet, whats wrong with renovating or (blaring horns!) CHANGE! Yes, I'll agree that Gerald has always been working but think about this, what would happen if drummers of today who play in church, got their musical chops (fundamentals) on point and could play every phrase that Gerald can currently play, do you think he'll still be working as much 5-10 years from now? (Ignore the fact that he's almost in his 40's)

ojay16 u make a great point. Gadd, Cobham, Weckl, and Chambers still play the same way they have over the years and nobody askes them to adapt. Why because thats them, thats their styles. They have carved niches in the world of music that nobody can take from them. And i say that with confidence cause i've heard them all many times live.  How dare i throw lil Gerald Heyward in the same breathe as those people!!! lol He has had just as much influence on some maybe even more that some of them. Back in 85 it wasn't those cats that made me fall in love with drums, it was him. It's because of him i've learned about them. They showed me how far u can go, how good u can be if u really practice. He planted the seed, he made me fall in love with them joints(drums). And4 the record there are a ton of cats that has take gospel, and r&b drumming to the next level. I think he'll be around, dude stuff is tried and true.

You must be out of your mind to say that Weckl has been playing the same over the years lol!  Weckl is the very reason for the inexcusable performances from Gerald.  Weckl keeps getting better.  So does Chick Corea.  Age is no excuse people.  Retire if you're washed up lol!  That's how I see it.  It would be pretty sad if someone posted a recent clip of me and it had to be defended by my playing 20 years ago lol!  And Gerald did not influence all of us.  I never knew who he was.  Some of us grew up on Ladell.  And I'm proud to say that my influence is not washed up by any means.  Ladell is still killin.  :)

2talldrummer you should post your own clip, plenty of people posted clips here. You calling out people like you something....

That pisses me off everything is always taken to the next degree on this forum. Then it makes other people look like bad...  >:(
