Not much, I don't use them a lot.  I just know how they are formed i.e. the intervals.

Wait a minute! Does that mean they are not necessary? I've heard your clips and i notice a lot pf "phat" chords. How do you NOT use tri-tones?

O.K., let me explain.  What I meant is I don't really set out to play a tri-tone, it is usually a bi-product of the chords I play.  We use tri-tones all the time, but as soon as someone says the word "tri-tone", all of a sudden it becomes a mystery.  I know DaNati made a statement like this ealier, but it's the truth.  Don't let the word itself confuse you.

So, they aren't really necessary, but just realize they are naturally apart of many chords.

Unless, I'm completely missing the boat here, one could turn these two chords (and the subsequent passing chords) into an interesting groove, no?

For instance, using a "D" to get back to the Db Maj9 chord (instead of the Ab7 b9 #5 )

D/ Gb A C E

or

use a walkdown starting from the Fm9 to the Db Maj9 chord:

Em7    (E / G B D)
Ebm7  (Eb / Gb Bb Db)
DMaj9 (D / Gb A C E)

or

change the bass notes to the walkdown above; now you have a 3-6-2-5-1 progression:

Fm9

Bb / G B D
Eb / Gb Bb Db
Ab / C F A

Db Maj9

You are correct sire.

What's important about a groove/ what defines it is the rhythm..
So give us a pic of what you envisage, explain to us the rhythm..
You could give these same chords to 5 players & they could come with 5 different grooves/ something not close to a groove at all.
