intimidating musicians

So many keyboardists around here will fill up every free space imaginable and there are times when it sounds sloppy and unprofessional.  Your goals should be to develop solid chops and the wisdom to use them effectively.

I have STACKS of tapes from recording various organist. I've put a few of them on mp3 and listen over and over, now I dont have to ask someone what they did, cuz the tapes never lie. Now my digital camera has a voice recorder on it so I just use that. (casio exilim ex-z77)

Sounds like a media input overload.  I guess I'm different because while I like to learn new things, I'm not all that gung ho about doing what others are doing.  Half the church organists in St Louis are doing their thing and the other half are chasing them around trying to figure out what they're doing.  Above all else, make sure you can stand on your own as a musician.  Learn as much as you can but also take those lessons and make them your own.

I think I'm on my way to developing a unique style. I've been studying about 4 different organist with completly different styles, I hope to be able to play thier styles as well as have my own. It is defenatley important to differentiate yourself from other musicians. I'm glad we're pretty much on the same page.  I didn't want to make it seem like I have a problem with your method of learning.  I've been playing for over 20 years so if I don't have a style, then it's probably too late.     I enjoy playing and doing new things keeps it interesting.  The more you play,  you'll find that doesn't take much of an effort.  On the flip side, I've heard musicians play the same songs, same style, day in and day out and think nothing of it.

You're right because when I am playing gigs I heard the same style of music and their chops. Now I listen and watch but when it's time for me to step up, I might do something a little different.

I had a gig last night and three musician I knew of had almost the same style and they opened up in the key of Ab

Now I am listening and I thought why I dont I do something.

I opened up in E natural and played some Jill Scott music with a Jazzy feel.

Now I have to credit to the two musician that I had listen to. We were on the same page as far as learning and knowing chops but our music foundation was different.

Hey man I feel what you saying..bro when I first started playing at my church and when we had evening programs i let different keyboard my on my keyboard and they kill it... it sound so good.... but the only thing I just was thought to myself and told myself you have to get on the ball man you can be like that or maybe better... But just let them encourage you to work and practice harder... Man Real Talk...

Whenever you are playing, don't put on the hat of comparison, but rather, the attitude of learning. If you keep reminding yourself that you are learning, you will just keep improving.

This weekend I had a wonderful experience of listening to this young guy who keep improving & i was encouraged.

I did a gig not long ago at a college and they had this young guy play a couple songs so I didn't complain.  He was still learning.  When he got done, he just left the stage and didn't even say thanks for allowing him to play my awesome keyboard rig.
