What are you capable of when you warm up?
« on: February 06, 2008, 11:58:08 AM »
When I warm up or I have been practicing a long time even I am surprised at what Im able to play. When I start playing cold seems like I cant come up with much. I have seen musicians that start off cold and run licks and scales all over the board. I was wondering if it was just me that has a hard time playing without a warm up. I said those same musicians would be killing the keyboard if they were warmed up or maybe everyone does not have that problem. When I say warmed up this the veins in my hands are usually showing.  :D
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

I think the reason you might play better after you warm up is because you might be more familiar with the location of the notes on the keyboard after playing for a few minutes ?/? ?/? ?/?

I honestly have never considered warming up before service.

I few minutes is not enough for me. Maybe it is because I practice sporadically.

I dont practice as much as I should, thats I'm not were I'm capable of being at.
But right now I'm pretty sure of where the notes are without even thinking about them, so that helps me a lot. I think I play the same wether I warm up or not

I've listened to MM's practice midis--there is no way I could ever say he doesn't know where his notes are on the board/ piano!!

This man is a master.

I guess he just wants to play a "warm up" piece before he can say he is ready to play..but he thing is that he is already playing while he call's it warm up.

I know of a guy who can start of by doing some crazy scale runs, but he just never does it coz he believes that music "is a language, hence the tempo & stuff 1 plays should go with the essence of the song"..hence he says a big no to starting off with crazy scale runs.

But he sometimes contradicts himself because you find him doing the runs as soon as he switches on the board.

Personally, I don't feel like warming up...maybe once I can do those cool scale runs, then I might want to warm up a bit ;D

MM, I always noticed that I play better after I warm up. I thought that it was just me. I can't say why, or if it is mental or physical. I usually play a little before I leave home, and play a little waiting (talk) music before service starts.

For me, it's not even about warming up or not.  It's about how I'm feeling at that particular time.  I do understand where u coming from MM.  It's always a good idea to warm up first, even if it's just banging on da keys for a couple of seconds.

Working on that somewhat. I have changed up my practice routine in the last month. I have way more power and endurance than I had previously. There is a trick to it. I can practice for hours but now Im at the point were if I put on a drumbeat I can do drills for hours and not be bored.

I have been revisiting my major scales. I can do them up and down the whole keyboard but Im not fluent with both hands as I should be in every key. I can go up and down at a pretty good speed with each hand individually in every key. One of the secrets is the fingering 1,2,3 and 1,2,3,4. When you realize most of the time when you play the major scales that what you are going. Once I get those scales like I want them in every key all the way up and down the keys. Im about to go ballistic. :D

Ive also been working on my styling in every key. That old school rock and roll feel will take your bass hand on a trip. ;D

That's me all day.  If I'm just not into it, I'll play generic(safe) stuff but it's always better when I'm in the zone and can really reach.

I'm kinda like that, but For me its about being comfortable. On sunday I had to play for my group. The church has an xp80 that doesnt have wieghted keys. So when I start to play I was not used to the feel of the keys,  so I wish I woulda spent a few minutes getting familiar with the way the keys respond. Also we didnt have a proper rehearsal with the drummer, and the group wasnt singing to thier potential, so I was not feeling it.

I agree with a warm-up before a service. I rarely get a chance to do it...but when i do, i (if not every1 else) can feel the difference. Sometimes just running the scales alone, but if i get the time i like to be extra and try chords for every scale degree in both hands. Needless to say, thats how i begin every practice session.

I'm sooo used to playing the B3 at church.  My organ at home hasn't been played as much and the keys are a little stiffer.  It's amazing how much of a difference that makes.

A part of working that out is practice playing harder on the keys at home. Then when you actually play, play with a lighter touch. I have had a habit of doing that when I played the XB3. I was wondering why my hands were acting up. Sometimes its difficult to make the switch when you've been playing on weighted keys all day. I played on the motif 7 a few weeks ago and it felt terrible.

Another problem that can happen when people have abused the keyboard especially with weighted keys. Sometimes the response slows because of stuck or damaged keys. I couldnt figure out why I felt more comfortable playing the S90 at home more than the S90 at church. The keyboard at church was dragged around by other musicians and some of the keys are slow to respond.
