Smooth chords/jams for spoken word/ poetry events
« on: January 24, 2008, 02:07:23 PM »
I'll be hosting an event coming up and wanted to see if you guys have any suggestions for some nice smooth chords people can talk over. I'll probably have keys, bass, sax, and drums. Any cool rhythms please let me know.

How about this groove from Dwele?

The groove and chords are super easy.  Straight Neo-Soul.

If you need these chords let me know.

Here are the chords...

LH / RH

B, Gb, Db / DbEbGbAbBb (B Maj 7 6/9)
Eb, Bb, F / CDFGBb (Eb Maj 7 6/9)

During the verse and chorus it just does these two chords back and forth

THE BRIDGE IS

Ab / BbBDbEbGb (Ab Min 11)
Bb / CDbEbFAb (Bb Min 11)
Eb / CDFGBb (Eb Maj 7 6/9)

Repeat this twice then go back to those first two chords..

That's it..

Notice the think 5 note neo-soul chords and then the cluster (close) voicings for the minor chords in the bridge

Here another groove.. this would prolly be considered more smooth jazz than neo-soul but it's still smooth.

It's just a short example.  I got this groove from a clip on YouTube this guy was jamming with these changes.
http://www.learngospelmusic.com/media/albums/userpics/106308/NeoSoulGroove.mp3

Here are the chords

G, D, G / FABbD (G min 9)
C, G, C / GABDF# (G maj 9 / C)
Eb, Bb, Eb / GBbCDF (Eb maj 7 6/9)
Ab, Eb, Ab / GbBbCF (Ab 13)

For the soloing I used the G minor pentatonic scale (which is a Bb major pentatonic scale started on the 6th) with an added 9th and #4 (blues note).
G minor pentatonic scale:  G, Bb, C, D, F added notes are A, C#

While soloing I think of the scale as a pool of notes to pull from and use for my solo.  And then I just try different rhythms and note combinations.

This is a good question.. I had look up some theory on "key center" and here's what I got..

http://www.outsideshore.com/school/music/almanac/html/Music_Theory/Basic_Theory/Key_Center.htm

With this definition in mind, I'd say it's Bb or Eb because that is the common note or tone between all of the chords in the changes.

Did you mean something else by key center?

Can anybody shed some light on this?

that groove was hott. Question? How do you know what scale to run over chords?

Excellent question:  The chords in the progression pull from the 1 (G minor) and eventually returns there.  Now there is a technique in modal jazz/smooth jazz and I forget the name right now where you basically select a central tone or scale and use that tone or scale throughout the whole progression.  In this instance it would be the G minor chord because the song starts on the G minor and eventually resolves to the G minor.  Plus there are tones in the G minor scales that you'd use that are common to all of the chords in the progression.

Now from sing chord scale analysis you have a few choices for what scale you'd want to use for the G minor.

You have G Dorian which is F major scale that starts and ends on the G
You have G Aeolian which is Bb major scale that starts and ends on the G
You have G minor pentatonic scale which is a Bb pentatonic scale that starts and ends on the G
You have the G Blues scale which is the G minor pentatonic scale with an added #4 (C#)
there are more choices but these are a good start...

I chose to go with the G minor pentatonic scale because it's more melodic and doesn't sound so much like you're running scales up and down the keyboard and there are also fewer notes to choose from and use.

Now a good technique or tip for soloing would be to use the notes from the scale as a pool of notes to use.  Try to start and end on different notes within the scale and try to be as melodic as possible like singing but using the piano to sing for you.  I'm still learning this but some guys that I like to listen to for this is Jeff Lorber, Alex Bugnon, George Duke, Herbie Hancock.  Especially Jeff Lorber is the master of taking that pentatonic scale and exploring all of the melodic possibilities..

If you'd like some more info and example on uses of the pentatonic scale which is really THE go to scale that all of the pros use, check these YouTube Videos out:
