Erroll Garner... WOW

Check this legend out, Mr.. His style is ridiculous and he swings very hard.

I'm going to transcribe his solo and incorporate some of those runs into my playing... especially at about the 1:20 mark!

And yes his left hand is ridiculous.  He uses a lot of block chords in his playing which is something that I think translates well to gospel piano and organ playing. 

Remember though to attack his style at the very basic or elementary level so that you have a foundation to work from.  Don't try to play like Erroll or any of the other greats but try to UNDERSTAND the why and how these great players do what they do and then add those fundamentals to your toolbox.  Don't go for an approximation of a person's style.. go for an understanding of the basics behind the style!!

When I was listening to him.. I couldn't help but think about how this style resembles the gospel bounce in Ab so much.  You know that LH rhythmically hitting chords while your RH is playing octaves and 5ths.

At the 1:19 mark he did this..

Going down the keyboard...

Ab, F, Eb, C, Bb, Ab, F, F, Ab, E, E, Ab, D going into a Bb7 chord
