Ghost notes on the snare(extra flavor)

I was looking at some clips and I was wondering what is the concept, if i can put it as that, of playing ghost notes on the snare to add that "flavor" to the music?

There is an excercise were you play singles, doubles, and triplets

 R L R L R L R L

 R R L L R R L L

 R LL R LL RR L RR L RR LL R

 practice this at an even tempo for maybe 5- 10  mintues, stop and stretch and do it again.  Shoot for endurance rather than speed and the speed will come.  Ghost notes come kind of naturally when you develop stick control.  It is like a balance between rebound and the pulse you want to ghost .  Guys correct me if I'm wrong.  NJ I hope this helps. Yeah thats one way i was thinking about, thanks.  And the other is when you play 2 & 4 on the snare but inbetween you play 16th notes(idk) with the left hand(think about Jeremy Haynes).

I would suggest that you study the music of James Brown(I know that this is LGM).  Study the MUSIC.  Clyde Stubblefield and John "Jabo" Starks brought this style of playing into prominence years ago.  Also Bernard Purdie implemeted this style on many recordings that he did.  Ghost notes have been a part of my playing for about 20 years now.

Ok go out and buy a CD called The Best Of Toto. The song you are looking for is called Roseanna (sp). PRACTISE the song from start to finish trying to sound just like Jeff P. after you master that song ghost notes will be nothing for you!

...yeah man.  The Half Time Shuffle is one of my definate weaknesses (sp?) along with Samba.  I suck at both.  I need to get on it.  I've been watching Zoro's Shuffle lessons on M.D. 2005 a lot though. 8)

...man we were talking about Jeff P. and Carlos Vega briefly on another thread.  Too huge losses.  Both cats were gone much too early but left a definate Legacy. 8)

Man that clip Funky posted is a kinda tough :(! My New Years Goal is to Step my Independence up a lil bit! ;)

...Oh yeah, the Half Time Shuffle by Jeff P. is a definate headache with all of those Ghost Notes.

That's cake - I'm trying to get the funky hi-hat with the ride bell pattern, while keeping that groove.

And yes, it's "only" triplets between the ride cymbal bell and the hats, but still...

...I learned how to play ghost notes by watching Dennis Chambers "Serious Moves".  I used to fall asleep watching that VHS when I was younger.  Later on, I started applying them by using the famous Paradiddle Rudiment.  I would Ghost the last two diddles while playing 1 and 3 on the kick.  That's something I got from Dave Weckl off of one of his old VHS tapes which I can't remember which one it was right now.  RLrr LRll It's all about feel with the Ghost Notes.  That's why you have to listen to the Music and then be carefull when you add your colour (ghost notes) to the groove.  Sometimes, you don't need to add any ghost notes.  Watch, Listen and learn from the pro's and from the actual music itself.

I'm not a drummer,can you explain the ghosts on the snare a little bit? I really enjoy Steve Gadd,Grady Tate,Bernard Purdie with the jazz cats like Charlie Earland,McGriff,Smith on organ,When these cats play their shuffle groove using the rimshots ,snare etc it sounds so kool,not the boom chucka thing.Want to make or get some good drum loops to practice with.Any ideas? If you look for Charlie on u-tube,he had a version of More today than yesterday ,really need to get a loop with THAT feel.thanks,be blessed!!!!!
