Piano v Organ
« on: December 18, 2007, 11:51:46 AM »
Hey guys, iv seen alot of interesting organ DVD's and i just want a good opinion from you guys about how the Organ DVD's can help a keyboardist. i.e the Runs, scales and progressions. Obviously it would probably help in some sort of way, but i want to know what aspects have helped if theres anyone here who have taken that path as a keyboardist. God Bless
Timi :)

Sorry cant answer this question because I play the piano/keyboard very different than I play the Organ. I'm pretty advanced at it so it really doesn't matter to me which one I play because I prefer both of them. To me the only thing about the organ is Coordination if you got then you really shouldn't have a problem playing the instrument.

My suggestion would be to try out a DVD and see if you find it helpful.  Every musician is different and what works for one may not work for others.  I don't see any reason why a DVD geared towards the organ wouldn't benefit you on piano.  I find the more organists I see and hear, the more I want to have a unique style and you have to find that for yourself.  Instruction is always good so you can get the theory part of it.

I have several Organ DVD's (PJ Morgan, Quennel Gaskin, Eddie Howard, Hammondman), and a few Piano DVD's also (Jamal Hartwell, Justin Gilbert, John Peters).

If you play keys and have no intention of learning how to play the Organ, I don't recommend getting an Organ DVD.  The ONLY things that will be of any use are the runs.  For everything else, the technique is so different it won't help you.

It's tight.  If you want to learn some nice licks and patterns for traditional songs (Praise the Lord Everybody, This is the day, etc.), then you'll be helped.  The Traditional Piano chapter is TIGHT.

Also he has a VERY different approach to Worship movements that really made me think.  He demonstrated some nice arpeggios also.

I'd recommend it.
