After reviewing some of your choices, I've decided to change my list a bit.

DAVE WECKL- Extremely well rounded, love his latin jazz stuff, just nasty.
JOJO MAYER - INSANE technique and everything else
NAT TOWNSLEY - I've always loved this brotha's solo's. (and everything else)
JEREMY HAYNES - This brotha is just tooooo FUNKY

Why would you not want to sound like yourself?  Why would you not want to be innovative?  At one point, you would want to emulate your influences, but at some point, you would not want to sound just like ____ ____ (insert favorite drummer's name), unless the producer calls for a specific fill from ____ ____.

The problem with the other forums (and this forum at times) is that we tend to (want) to sound like ____ ____, and generally do not attempt to find their niche.

What if our drumming heroes never carved their niche?  We would have a lot of Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones in the drumming world, and that my friend would be so plain vanilla.

Variety is the spice of life (the other is in-school deferment: The other spice of life).   ;D

I would honestly have to say nobody's.  Because if my style is just like somebody else's, I'll never stand on it's own.  I will constantly be compared.  People would say "he plays just like so-and-so."  I would prefer to have creativity to create my own style which I have done.  I would suggest that you take the influences that you have and make them your own by adding your own twist to it.  This may open up a new topic for dicussion.

End of thread.

One should look to develope their own voice.  I'm not saying don't take from other drummers at all.  But one should want to develope their own voice the way those cats did.

I'm glad to see the number of  people who took the time to add to this topic, I learned a lot from your responses. Some names like Calvin Rodgers,Spanky,Weckl,Chris Dave,Ron Bruner came up numerous times. I expected to get the various view and I got what I expected. No one on this  EARTH creates or develops anything out of NOTHING.There is always something or someone to spark the Creativity within them. All of our Drum Hero's Emulated are/or were inspired by someone else,They took(Copied,Stole, borrowed,Emulated etc....etc...) what they liked and it developed it.It's  highly impossible that you'll sound exactly alike, Now we might be able to tell that you've been listening to or studying intensely a particular drummer by you attempting to pull off or Pull of a particular lick......But I doubt you'll sound exactly like them.So instead of saying you sound like Dennis or Spanky we should be saying "It sound like he's been listening to Dennis or Spanky of whomever". Vinnie Colaiuta listened to a lot of Tony Williams, Calvin Rodgers listened to a lot of Vinnie, I'm not saying that's all they listened to but I'm quite sure they listened to them a lot. So Imitation is good it will always come out being you and Imitation is good as long as you don't start dressing like you Drum Hero.
Peace :)
