How Many Hymns Do You Know?

Besides my favorites "Tis So Sweet" and "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" which I'm known for, there are a WHOLE lotta hymns out there.  Let's see if we can name some without repeating!  You got the Baptist Hymnal, National Baptist Hymnal, African American Heritage Hymnal, United Methodist Hymnal,etc.  whew the list goes on and on but let me start this one out and in fact, if you don't know it, LEARN IT!!!!!

Yeah, Trina Trine grew up and was raised believe it or not in a baptist church and proud member and participator of the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A.  Just because I play contemporary doesn't mean I don't know those hymns and can play them STRAIGHT!   I just do them the "Trina Trine" way sometimes but the original way is good too!!!   Mmm hmmmm....... ;)

As a Methodist music director/organist I play 5 - 6 hymns every Sunday on a Allen Pipe Organ. I know hymns :)

" Trust and Obey " (when there no other way to be happy in Jesus)
" A Might Fortresss si Our God"
" The Lord Bless You and Keep You"

Don't get me started on hymn playing......:)

I too am a Hymn lover, I have about 6 hymnals. The 2 Churches that i currently attend (Lutheran + COGIC) Both sing a lot of hymns, but the new church I'm playing for is into Choir and worship songs  :(
some of my favorites:

If you playin for a Cogic church you better know ALL the hymns that you church sings in EVERY KEY or you will be embaressed

That was the next thing I was going to say.  Learn those hymns in every key and yes you will be embarrassed if a mother, deacon or even the bishop knows this stuff and 9 times out of 10, THEY DO!  Thanks for sharing this extensive list!

I know too many hymns to name.  I've practice them so many times, when the page number is called out I start playing before they say the title.  True story.  I have many hymn books The "old" New National Baptist Hymnal (the one Trina Trine used in her vid).  Also, I have a COGIC one, and an AME one.  Right now my favorite hymn is "Oh How He Loves You And Me".  That may change according to how I feel later.

Believe it or not in the NEW Baptist hymnal  they have SMALLWOOD'S--- TOTAL PRAISE.

I am born and raised in the Baptist church but had played in the AME church. My favorite song is "Saved" (although no one sings it here...why? They never heard of it!! and it's in the hymnal!!) I guess another question (I may post this as another thread) but how can you teach new hymns to choirs so that everyone can get it pretty easily? I play the same old songs cause they don't know any others although I know maybe 2x as more as they do.

WOW!!! "Saved" I think was in the old green Baptist Hymnal too!!!!  And yes, please post that thread too!  I haven't heard "Saved" since I was a little girl because we had our hymn of the month...in which we still do!  Made me think about that one....throwback hymn of the day....LOL

I Recently Applied for M.O.M at this AME Church, I am COGIC to the CORE and Love Hymns just not sure what to expect.. Any Advice? Any hymns in particular I should learn for an AME service?

That depends on the size of the church. Ive been to A.M.E. churches that had 50 members and one that has 20,000 members. The smaller ones will probaly have more older folks who will want a lot of anthems ( james cleveland etc) and a lot of old hymns like the Doxology which you probaly already know and songs like "Yes god is real". the larger Churches will wil be VERY simular to the COGIC sevices and will probaly sing a few of the same hymns and the same choir + worship songs, but they will probaly still sing the Threefold Amen at the end of service ( you do Know that right?)

Can you read music? If you cant, Dont expect to be hired as a MOM

I suggest if possible that you visit the church on a sunday morning before the audition to get a feel for the songs and the flow of the  service. If you need help you can always ask an ame organist for a few lessons
