...as musicians....period. ;)  Everyone goes through things like this no matter where or what you play.

Yeah, although, its more disheartening when our lifestyle (ie church) does this to us.

With other musical styles & genres musicians CAN have their emo moments... We have to remain obedient, patient & compromising.

Now I've been in the game for a while now....but the thing i can't stand is when another cat comes to your church out the blue....and plays one song and the cats you play with are hollaring all over the place....and I'm watching as well not in anger but sometimes in awe, it's just that I'm not gonna run to the other side of the church and back like I got my first kiss from a girl or something...LOL but it bothers me sometimes cause they fail to recognize my committment and dedication, but those things don't make me go to the woodshed becuase the spirit then becomes an I'l show them spirit...which I don't allow myself to reduce to, I just keep working on the things that I feel I need....not them...

First of all Eric my man, let me drop acoule little diamonds on you fam, although I understand how you feel. But on some real talk for a min. If u r setting the bar high, strong, right, and musically confident (no matter who comes there to play) they will never be able to intimidate you because, you've already set the tone of the enviroment so no other man or woman can change it. And remember this "Everybody will always play different, more exciting, and possibly be more creative than the next guy " BUT! 9 x's out of 10 they're not playing with your people or playing the music you've rehersed with ur choir or praise team, they're probably playing some other music that they're choir or praise team is singing. So remember "Different Players fit Different Enviroments" and again you're probaly the perfect fit for your church and him for his church! And its always good to hear someone elses translation of the music every once in a while. Don't be moved by ur people (fellow band members or other musicians) screaming and yelling over the other drummer, scream and yell right along with them! Appreciate the difference in other people because eventually even they would get tired of hearing that all the time and then they'll be calling you back to come and play because they will miss the consistant sound and vibe you bring to the enviroment! It happens all the time homie trust me!!!! Let the "Show Boats" show! And you continue to show GOD! You want to please him with ur gift and not the crowd!!!!!!
Holla Fam! Stay encouraged!!!!

I remember in my mid teens i was playing at a church for couple years i went to music  school, learned how to read and write drum music. One Sunday night before church got started, one of the choir members relative/uncle came to church with the BASS PLAYER. I was asked to step aside and let him play, the church was pedominately West Indians, they love calypso and reggae. I played those styles of music, but i guess it wasn't good enough for them, i admit he was good with those styles. I sat there and watch him play and learn, after service he got alot of praise for his playing. I remember his neice coming to me and said that is my uncle. BOY!! >:( i was upset deep down, but it made me practice those styles harder. One night i played and that same drummer was there, and after service he came up to me and said that i am talented and better than him. Use every  disappointment as motivation

Hey whats up peoples?!! Ive been reading this site for a while and just now registered. First let me say that this site is great and a blessing to me. I feel like I know some of you personaly just by reading your post. EricT don't feel like the Lone Ranger dude. It can be tuff on musicians in the church. I kinda know where ya comin from but agree with the above post. We gotta acknowledge when someone is good or dare I say better than we are. I go through this alot. At our church I am one of two drummers. I was the primary drummer for about 2 yrs. The church uses my kit and gear. My man "T" came and started playing with us about 9 mths ago. I can honestly say that there is no jealousy on my part. The dude actually is one of my best friends now. I feel very blessed cause we don't try to compete but help one another. I fully realize that his skill level is higher than mine and since he started playing it has really helped me in trying to step it up on my part. So just go with the flow man and be blessed. Remember if God put you there as the drummer aint nobody gonna take you out unless God has something else for ya
