I have to admit i will be adding mahalia to my list for a must listen to artist for learning how to gospelize hymns and play in church
although it is real old time and even boring at times
the progressions take some unexpected twists and the fills are slow enough to hear and get you started out/you hear some reeal traditional piano playing
and for you organists make sure you set your chorus to C! to give that old time sound
this is perfect for my senior choir playing in the style of dorsey who played on a lot of mahalia jackson and was really the father of traditional gospel gives the seniors a glimpse into their past.
albertina walker is great for gospel choirs she too had a prolific musician behind her
James Cleveland who stood gospel on its ear in his day.
once you can play in these two styles there really should be no devotional or hymn that you cant really lay down.
next up is Twinkie which takes what you learned from Albertina to another level
listen really close it may take a few months of listening really hard to her stuff before you catch on that this is what kim burrell is really pontificating on.
once you catch twinkie (live at charlotte) then you can tackle kim burrell
you now are ready to play for every choir
senior mahalia
gospel albertina
mass twinkie
youth kim burrell
armed with the chord structure
voicings
fills
ornaments
rhythms
progressions
and feel of these different genres you will be a versatile musician.
I thank whoever it was who told me to add Mahalia to my list I was surely sleeping on her.
