going backwards to go forward

This post is about building technique and keeping technique. I will refer to hanon a manual I have worked with for about 5 years or so. I have gone through the book several times especially on Sundays; it is an invaluable tool for developing finger dexterity.

Some people say to transpose Hanon; but people who say that are not really plugged in to what hanon is for. Hanon is strictily for finger strengh and dexterity.  there are some exercises in the virtuoso section which are transposed but the true purpose of hanon is to build strength.

If you want to play in every key you pick up "Beringer" dexterity exercises,  "Clementi's  adnus parnassum", "Pischna" or my favorite "Raphael Josephy"
With that being said, sometimes I dont have time to go through exericises 1-60 and even when I do I am usually so burned out by exercise 40 that I dont put sufficient detail and concentration to the later, and the most important, exercies.

What I started doing is work from the back of the book toward the front. The earlier exercies then become cool down exercises after the virgorous work out of the virtuoso exercises.
I also find that because I am fresh i can pay sufficient attention to what I am doing and finally I am working with the crazy trills contained in the later section.

Has anyone else out there done anything similar?

I've been hearing about the hanon exercises for SO long, and I only started to practice them this week.

Would you say hanon has improved your speed when doing runs?

it does many things you will learn as you progress that your ability to play everything from runs to chords will improve.

the first 20 are really important in developing your technique

so really take your time in learning them i recommend one hanon each week

number 6 and 5 will help you with runs more then most of trhe others

please learn these well before moving on

and you should explore the transcendent exercises as well

the virtuouso exercises are extremely important but should be taken up after you have developed sufficient strength

Please learn these well before moving on and you should explore the transcendent exercises as well

as i stated earlier the book is devided into three sections foundationl transcendent and virtuoso each section has about 20 exercises in them

so i was saying to really be able to play all the foundational exercieses  the first 20 and the transcendant exercises before following my guidelines about practicing the book backwards (exercise 60 going back toward exercise one

This is what I've been looking for!  I want to do some exercises that will increase my finger strength and dexterity.  What's the name of the book?  Is it just called "Hanon"?

Thanks Diverse for posting this. I've had that book for years and I've slacked off a whole lot in practicing my stamina and runs and things like that. You have encouraged me to pull it out and start over from the beginning and work my way through. Thanks again Bruh!

I think the name of the book is the virtuoso pianist but if you go into any music store and ask for hanon or go to a piano teacher and ask about this book or call your local ,music school or college or go to barnes and noble you will have no problem most piano players know about this book and almost every jazz instrumentalist knows about this book many sax and guitar players use this book to exercise theri chops

I live in NYC so i am a little spoiled i just go to sam ash or guitar center

but you can order it online
