If both aren't working, its probably the midi connection itself.  You sure you have the USB midi driver installed??

Now if you using the alesis then I pretty sure you goin to have problems...I went to a church and they had a alesis and i tried to use it for my b4 program (WIth USB Midisport) and no luck whatsoever...all you need is midi out plugged in your keyboard and that's it.

For Sonar go to options--->MIDI Devices and make sure that your midi cord is highlighted in the INPUT area and Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth for the OUTPUT. For Cubase...I have no idea, although I have the program I never use it...don't like it at all LOL!

First you goin to need Midi USB cable for the PC. Then get any sequencer progrom...There are alot of programs that mainly do the same purpose..

Anvil Studop
Cakewalk Sonar
Steinberg Cubase
Propellerhead Reason
Cakewalk Project 5
Powertracks Pro
Protools (Don't know if they handle MIDI too well as Sonar)

and more...These are most of the popular ones

ddw4e,
I absolutely know nothing about recording midi's.  Which of these programs is the most user friendly?

I know Anvil Studio is free to download from I think...I never used it before and plus I wouldn't know cause I have full version of Cakewalk Sonar and Reason LOL! I believe Reason has a trial version, not for sure Protools or not. So I really trying to say is...just chk them out and look for trial versions cause honestly I have no idea LOL!

For me Cakewalk Sonar only because I got used to it...I wouldn't say it was user friendly for me...really none of these programs aren't really user friendly...just something to get used to and then it become easier for ya....It took me 3 months to get used to sonar and maybe 2 weeks for Reason cause Sonar is more in depth and Reason is just a expensive sound module for the PC. Now Cakewalk has Sonar, Music Studio, Project 5, Homestudio (probably best for beginners...that's what I started from), and Kinetic and I have tried them all but Sonar was the best for me. I have Cubase but I don't like it at ALL but you may be good at it so it's up to preference when trying to figure out where you want to start recording with what program.

To piggyback on what I said, take a look at Fruityloops. I forgot to mention that program and I have that! That may be the program for you if you into loops and beats.
