This part is all timing:

If on the piano make sure you use your sustain pedal!

Example:

CC/CEG            Our Fatherrrrrrr
CC/CEG            Which Are In Heavennnnn

CC/CEG            Give Us This Day
CC/CEG            Our Daily Bread

Etc...

Play this part hard and with force!

Hope this helps!

Thanks. I will share  these with my son, who's 10 and plays the piano.  Although he plays for the youth choir (ages 4 - 8), these hymns are inspirational to all.  Again, thanks. His mom

Devotion, Dr. Watts

These songs in their most basic form can be played in a Major key, the only minors will be when the song lands on one of the minor notes.

Let me explain a little theory.  (We'll use C as an example)

C D E F G A B
1 2 3 4 5 6 7

The progression is as follows:
1Maj 2min 3min 4Maj 5Maj 6min 7dim

You never leave the C scale when playing any of these chords.

CMaj=C E G   Dmin=D F A  Emin=E G B  FMaj=F A C   GMaj=G B D   Amin=A C E  Bdim=B D F

At this time there is no need to go into a minor scale because these songs are played in a Major key, not a minor.  They do at times use minor chords, but the notes used are all the same.
Understand the difference between a minor chord and a minor key.

A minor chord is 1 3b 5.  Take the 3rd note in the major scale and move back 1/2 step (also called flatting it).  So Cmin is C Eb G
For minor key, the scale is 1 2 3b 4 5 6b 7b .  So the Cmin scale is  C D Eb F G Ab Bb.

(You would also need to understand diminished if you are trying to approach a song with theory.  dim = 1 3b 5b so Cdim = C Eb Gb)

These are just the basic rudiments of triad (or three note) chords.  Unless you understood a whole lot more than this, taking a theoretical approach to learning a song is one big headache.  You'll get there in time, but for now concentrate on getting the notes involved and put theory to it later.

Here it is in it's "simplest" form.  I'm using the number system so you can play whatever key you wish.  (Majors are capital, minors are lower case)

Fa    - V
ther -  I
I    -  IV
Stretch   - I
My
Hand   -   IV
To   -   V
Thee   -  I

No   -  V
Oo   -  I
ther help -  vi
I Know   -  V

If thou -   I
With  -   vii
Draw  -   vi
Thyself -  IV
From
Me  -  V

Whe  -  I
ther shall  -   IV
I   -  V
Go   -  I

You can use a lot of Walks (meaning play the notes in between where you are going) in a song like this since there is so much time.
Also try some arpeggios to fill the song up.

You probably hear people play this using a Blues kinda feel.  For that you would need to first learn it the basic way, then learn to play the blues scale, then learn some of the tricks they use.

Blues scale is: 1 3b 4 4# 5 7b
Just play around with it and see what happens. Most people play it backwards to get back to their I chord.

Hope this helps

Just as I am
Touch me Lord Jesus
In the Garden
I must tell Jesus
Further Along

ok actually more than four but wonderful songs never-the-less

I never reviewed a CD before but I couldn’t resist.

I was scrolling through yahoo looking for some examples of ‘Guide me oh great Jehovah’ and I was disappointed because you know how it is all the don marsh type stuff is just not how we do it; na mean?

But, then I saw the James Abington album ‘49 hidden treasures in the African American hymnal’  and I began playing it and was elated to hear
all the diversity you know i love diversity why else is my tag name diverse

I know some of you think it is after the stupid organ well  it ain’t; but anyway…

This album takes you to school on how to play hymns for real. Where was this CD when I first started 6 years ago it would have saved me so much grief? But, I won’t cry over spilled milk.

The tracks range from spirituals, anthems and chicken and grits down home gospel. This is straight traditional high church stuff so don’t expect to hear any Donald Lawrence type changes. This is very straight classically trained musician stuff; but the advantage of this album, which has over forty tracks,
is that you can pick this up by ear and if you have the hymn book it can be a guide how to dress up a hymn you cant go wrong if you can play like this unless you go to a store front church then you might get tossed out on your ear playing like this.

Check this album out if you really want to learn how to play hymns in the African American tradition then you owe it to yourself to cop this. You’ll hear James get down on piano, Hammond and pipe organ.

This is the type of album that you just let play and attempt to play along. I guarantee if you do it every day you will begin to really capture the feel of the songs and styles of this great African American work.

This is high church stuff so it may not appeal to everyone; but if you go to a Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian, Lutheran or even many sophisticated Cogic and non-denominational churches where they do hymns then this CD is for you.

Some of the titles are:
‘The angels keep watching over me’ (he plays this on piano real old school Baptist style)
‘Guide me oh great Jehovah’ (is done on pipe organ and the way he interacts with the choir is awesome)

All of these tracks are with full choirs so you can teach your choirs directly and of course all the sheet music is contained in the hymn book

Some other titles are:

‘Day and night praise’ (which is an awesome worship song great for your worship service)
‘Hallelujah we sing’  which is an a cappella spiritual with congas in the background

I am really happy I discovered this album; this is exactly what I needed to energize my church. If your church is in a rut singing the same 30 songs year after year or if you playing is in a rut playing the same changes over every hymn then this is for you learn some high church hymns and arrangements. It will stretch your ears even if you don’t like playing high church style. It is nice to be able to do it; it could make for a nice departure within your phat contemporary chords

And if you want to learn a little more about how to play pipe organ, then you definitely need to purchase this because James Abington really plays this pipe organ. I love the interludes in between the songs.
Trust in the Lord and do good so shalt thou dwell in the land and verily thou shalt be fed.
