How do I break down a song?
« on: April 06, 2006, 12:18:48 PM »
I am new at this....leading a choir let alone learning to play the piano at the same time.....
I have a difficult group that im dealing with.... You know how nobody wants to stay on their own note
everyone is swayed to sing Saprano.....lol..... :)

What I need to know is what is the easiest way to break down a song and teach the special.....and about how long should it take to teach a song a have it ready for a Sunday service.....we practice once a week.....

I tried to convice people to buy a cheap tape recorder and $1.00 tapes and bring it to rehersals so that they can practice at home....a lot of times it is hard to remember songs....when you are busy and listen to the radio alot ....you are not going to remember what was taught....the week before.....but no one wanted to follow my advice....so it always sets us back when another rehersal comes.....

please help, Thanks in advance for any adivice
God Bless

Her is some pointers for starting. 1st, find out in each section who is your best singer that is in that section and make them section leader. Now what this does is take alot of pressure off of you. Next start to have sectional rehearsals with each section individually and make sure that you have already taught the section leaders FIRST let them do the work, sort of speaking for you.Belive me , they will make sure that it will be done right. 2nd make sure that you have placed everyone in their right section. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! one person in the wrong section will cause you alot of pain like you are having right now.3rd, make each section feel goog about their section. What I mean is that like, " nobody is better than the sops. and so on and so forth. This will make each section work harder at their section , then when you put it together it will jell. I hope this helps. I also do worshops in training choirs and groups. If you need me, I will be glad to come there and get yall on track. I have been doing this for over 25 years!
