Another thread came back to topic, right in the middle of a very interesting discussion, so I thought I'd ask here. I understand that playing a Hang like a drum is bad for the Hang and for your hands, which is one reason not to think of it as a drum. Then there was some talk of idiophones vs membranophones. I get this (although feel free to elaborate. It's very interesting. And then someone hinted that there's a list of technical reasons why steelpans and the Hang are not considered drums. If anyone fancies explaining this I'd be up for learning about it......
