DW Edge snare $900?
« on: February 20, 2006, 02:19:25 PM »
I was in guitar center the other day and I saw a DW Edge snare. That thing was like $900. For anyone who has heard it or played with it, is it really worth that much? I know there are some snares that sound as good or even better than that one, but which ones?

The Edge is that good. The closest you wil lget to that is the one that Dunnett made which probably costs even more.

A Brady snare can cost as much as $1200-1500.

You can get an Edge at Drums2Go for $700.

A friend of mine recently got a 7x13 edge and is having trouble tuning it. SabianKnight do you have any experience with edge snares as far as tuning/heads is concerned? I didn't know what to tell him since I've never played an edge snare before.

Hazy 300 or Remo Hazy and a G1 or Reverse Dot Power Center or Ambassador or CS. Medium tight top/tight bottom .  Tune snare sisde first without the top head on then tune the top. Make sur eyou seat (stretch both heads before tuning up.

Play with different tunings after you get use to your fav. Because it is so thick the sound will take getting use to and will seem slightly lower than it really is. You may find yourself tuning it higher than you normaly would. Listen to it at a distance to get the true sound.

Tune in a room like your living room or something. Bedrooms sometimes give a false tuning because they are so small. A drum like that will have sound bouncing all over the place giving you false readings.

Thank you very much for the reply SabianKnight. Hopefully that will help him or at least give a good starting point.

the edges I have used always sound a little clunky...

im not convinced such a heavy drum provides much variety in its sound.

i was convinced a 13"x7" was my dream drum, but it just sounded choked, kinda boxy.

this is my experience with all of the 6 we currently have at my work...

i think for a similar sound but with more colour, go for a solid shell dw 13" x 6", i saw chris dave using one and it sounded amazing!
