Do yall think that if you are a christian, secular music should be out of the question?

In my opinion, you can do both. It simply depends on what kind of secular music you are listening to.

I hold to more of a moderate/conservative view on this subject. I believe that if you are a Christian, you should not have the desire to listen to anything that does not represent God or that speaks against the Christian prinicples or against the principles of God.

Secondly, I do believe that if you are a Christian it is ok to listen to music like jazz, easy listening, etc. I do not on the other hand support music like Hip/Hop and Rap. I am still struggling with R & B music (Luther Vandross, Barry White, Patti Labelle, etc.)

I dont believe Christians should listen to secular music. It has nothing to do with Christ and that should be your main focus at ALL times as a Christian. I know some Christians believe that listening to music by Luther and Pattie for example is ok but it is not. I know that many try to apply it to their marriages , but that was not the intent of the song. Most often, when these songs are written, there is no husband/wife in the picture at the time instead they are singing the song to who every so happens to be the girl/boyfriend at the time. That is not the will of God. Sorry if I drifted off into left field a bit, but the bottom line is no secular anything in the kingdom of God.
I won't take nothing for my journey now. No turnin' back, no turnin' back.

i believe that we to strive to be like christ in every way strongly don;t think that Christ would be listening to secular music. He would not want to be aprt of anything that wasn't pleasing and lifting him up

i believe some classical music, some jazz, and some none gospel/christian songs with a positive message (ex: i believe i can fly) is cool for the christian ear.  i know that a lot of christians struggle with the secular music thing. but we have to remember that what ever we listen to carries it's own destinct spirit along with it (not to be deep), is it the spirit of the Annointed One or the fahter of all lies? something that we all need to think about :?:

I don't think there is anything wrong with listening to music that isn't going against God's word (neutral music such as instrumental music or even music with words that aren't sinful or wrong). Although it doesn't neccessarily praise God I don't think it's sin to listen to it. The same applies to movies, video games, attending basketball games, trips to Six Flags, ect.
Personally, I pretty much exclusively listen to Gospel music and sometimes jazz and classical. Ocasionally I listen to secular music but not often, most times it's because I'll hear something in the music and I'd like to understand what's being played.
If we're gonna say that music that isn't Christian is sin then we must say the same about movies, tv, and all other forms of entertainment.

Im not tryin to start nuthin but here are my two cents...

Me personaly i know a lot of musicians struggle with listning to only Christian music, and often listen to other types maybe for ideas ect. but in my personal opinion if you are a saived, you should only listen to Gospel music/instrimental gospel.

the reason we play, sing... is to glorify, worship and praise God. You cant serve the devil and God at the same time so...

I only listen to gospel music, some other musicians cant believe that. when i hear a secular song the devil will try to tempt me "oh its okay that beet is tight ect" but i rebuke it and gone on bout my buisness. I dont see the point in listning to secular music if your saived i think people just try to justify themselves.

My Pastor said " we can listen to the music but not the words". It's the words that have meaning not the music.

I put it like this: (for married folks) when you make love to your wife or husband, i don't think you'll be getting in that kind of mood by listening to "Lord Make Me Over"... now it really depends on the words of the music, Now of course, i do think it's not appropriate to be listening to laffy taffy, or drop it like it's hot... but i believe there are some music that's good for married couples, or even some old school stuff that speaks about music itself.. we also must be careful what we listen too because it is a weight and can lead us to cause sin, however what puzzles me is that as christians,  there is such a diverse topic about secular music, on radio's however, we will go to the movies to see a rated R movie, that is not only unholy for the ears but for the sight as well.

The bible says in 2 Corinthians 17,    "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,"

So if you are claiming salvation what are you still doing dabbling in the world and in sin. when you get saived you are seperate from the world, we live in the world but we are not of the world. You have to come OUT from among the world and live Christ like. and that is in every aspect of your life. so if you think you can listen to secular music and still be saived... what else are you doing and still saying your saived? are you justifying yourself and saying the things you are doing is ok as long as its not as bad as 'so and so'. In my book SIN is SIN no matter to what degree it is. for example: if you fornicate or kill someone or even tell a little white lie... if you dont repent and God comes back you will be judged accordingly.

So my question to yall is... what was the point in salvation and Jesus dying on the cross for your sins if you are just going to do the things of the world and not making a change?
