I use Vater 7A.  They're pretty durable since they're hickory. I like the wood tips.  I generally like to play with a thinner stick, just a preference of choice.

I use a variety (posted in a similar topic months ago):

Vater gets the first call because they are strong, solid and have less laquer than some other brands.

Fatback 3A Nylons and woods.... full powerful sound nice meat on rims... I bust wood tips on ride cymbals so when I am playing hard nylon is the way

*** Ocassionally I will use the 3A from Vic Firth (which A. Spears uses, they are slightly longer and a lil bit lighter than the Vater Fatback 3A but the only come in wood tip.

Maple Sweet Ride..... volume control... nice light, fast stick
Hickory Sweet Ride.... volume control... nice light and fast stick

Steward Copeland Standard... balance

David Silveria DSK... 17" long... well balanced yet light weight big stick with nylon tip for rockin out

Virgil Donati Assault... bring in the funk

1A wood... I love the acorn tips and 17" (16.97") length power and fullness

Fusion nylon... nice stick

Splash Stick... similar to rods with a a longer rubber covering for durabilty... alternative rock sound, rock ballads, fat funk

AccuStick... nylon covered rods... rock power ballads, great on cymbals

8A, Recording, John Blackwell Jia's Angel (formerly the Matrix)... nice funk and definition

Vic fIrth:

Akira Jimbo Signature... speed, balance and durability... small articulate sound

I've been through a lot of sticks to find the ones with the right feel. I discovered that I like the weight of 7a's but I hate the dimension. With that in mind, I play with Vic Firth's SD4 model. The dimensions are bigger than a 7a stick but the weight is relatively the same. If you plan on playing with this stick I suggest buying them in at least pairs of 4-6. They're made of maple so they break faster (not fast) than hickory sticks. The feel of them, to me, is worth a couple broken pairs every now and then. My version of the "beefy" stick in my stick bag is Vater 8a. This stick has a very nice feel. Hands down, out of all the brands I've tried Vaters are the more durable stick. I've used Vater 7a's that have lasted me longer than 5B sticks. There are a couple of Promark brands that I want to try and I need to broaden my stick prospects by adding some brushes, mallets, and splash sticks to my arsenal.
My goal as a musician is to be better than myself.

Drumsticks I use
« Reply #24 on: November 21, 2005, 09:39:09 AM »
I use either Vater Recording/Sweet Ride (the grip of 5b but feel of 5a and they don't chop up/destroy as easily and they give good smack on the snare and tom clairity)

Or I use the sticks I am endorsed with (Regal Tip 9A's) they are perfect for the "sweating palm" drummer they have a gloss finish coating so they don't slip out of my hands and they combine the VATER Recording/Sweet Ride combo into one stick in my opinion.

i am using 2b nylons. they work well for me because i can't stand it when a stick's tip breaks and makes the stick sound awful on the ride or when a stick just breaks fo rno good reason. that is why i moved to big stix, they don' t break hardly at all and the nylon tips won't chip..... :D
