WHO PLAYS BY EAR, AND WHO WENT 2 SCHOOL??? !!!
« on: July 29, 2005, 08:09:38 AM »
i am just curious to know who, like me, plays by ear and has had no real formal training. Or on the otherhand, how many of you have gone to school and know this is what you are gonna be doing 4ever, which is cool too. I wish i had taken music in school cuz i'd be a lot better off.

I have been formally schooled from my first year, which was 1989 through my last year at college (before transferring to finish my degree elsewhere) in 1998.

I've never had schooling, and I've played (on and off) for about 15 years.  I do want to take some classes just to know the basics and the jargon, but I live in Omaha NE (hick town) and I don't know anyone around here that gives lessons that I know is good though.  I know most of y'all on here are from bigger cities where music and culture is a lot more diverse, and I admire and look up to y'all a great deal.  I'm so happy to have found this website and gospelchops.com because I've learned, and am still learning a lot!!

I've been formally trained since the 6th grade until now( junior in college, percussion major). The formal training just makes you better at what you already have naturally. Just because you don't have formal training doesn't mean you're not a good musician or that a person that has had formal training is better than you. Case and point, Dennis Chambers, one of the greatest drummers of All Time, is a self-taught musician. But formal training makes everything A Lot Easier!!

I ENJOY PLAYING BY EAR! I HAVE ALOT OF CHOIR CDS THAT I LISTEN TO, SO I'M USED TO FIGURING OUT WHAT THE DRUMMER IS DOING. WHEN PEOPLE TELL ME ABOUT NOTES N TINGS I GET SOOOOOOO LOST :? I ALSO HAVE A FEW LIVE CONCERT VIDEO TAPES OF CALVIN RODGERS AND BIG MIKE, SO THAT ALSO MAKES IT ALOT EASIER TO GRASP

My only formal training was on the snare in the school band in 4th grade.  When I busted my practice pad during the summer before 5th grade, I never went back and that was 25 years ago.  I regret it to this day.  When people say things like "Give me a 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, or 5/7 groove or beat", I don't really have a clue.  Sometimes I feel like the guy in Drumline who was great at playing by ear and just memorized everything.  I definitely would encourage anyone who is starting out to at least get a basic foundation in understanding time signatures, theory, notation, reading, etc.  As a previous replyer indicated, it only makes what you can already do naturally that much better.

The first instrument I learned how to play was the saxophone, and I played that from elementary school until I graduated from high school.  So when I began playing drums around age 14 or so, I could already read extremely well.  However, in my early years as a drummer I only played by ear.  I think that since drumset is not classically considered a so-called "melodic instrument"...meaning that you don't play actual notes...I could get away with playing by ear because I really just needed to learn rhythms and coordination and become comfortable with moving around the kit.  That being said, nowadays, on of my biggest expenses playing the drums is books.  For me personally, I learn faster when I can see a patterns and licks written out.  Also being able to write out my own patterns helps me to keep from forgetting them and makes my practice time more effective.  Also, something to keep in mind is that learning to read is not as hard as many cats think.  The truth of the matter is that you can probably already play a lot of what you may see in a book.  It's just a matter of learning to recognize what a particular lick looks like on paper.  All that being said, I believe that reading is a skill any serious musician should seek to master because the benefits of being able to do so will greatly improve your playing, particularly being able to write things out for yourself.  However, I also believe that when it's time to sit down at the kit and express yourself, just pray, be lead by the spirit, and carry out your ministry.  Let your light shine and be a blessing to the body of Christ.  All glory and honor belongs to Him.

I had some lessons here and there but mostly I am self taught .
Once I got started I just stayed in the Stick Control book along with Ted Reed's Syncopation and now with dvds and tapes the information is easier to access.

The feeling is mutual, I wish I had taken music in school also. I thank God for what He has taught thus far. Continue to play for God's glory no matter what.

Be blessed

I started off by ear, but now I am doing both.  Don't listen to that BULL S@$! that some people say about people that read like, "They can't play unless they have music in front of their face". The people that read very well take away from themselves to devote their musical abilities to cats like Beethoven , Haydn, and Bach.  That takes alot of devotion and hardwork, just like we learn songs and licks by ear. Learn to do both and you can fulfill more than you expected in your life as well as filling both of your pockets!   8)

Ear verses school
« Reply #12 on: July 29, 2005, 08:51:56 PM »
Since a drummer asked this question, I will respond from the perspective of a drummer.

God gives each man an intelligence.  There is a current theory on multiple intelligences that says there are 8 different ones. Music is one of the intelligences.  I graduated from the US Army School of Music in Norfolk, Va with a 3.06 out of a 4.0 system.  Mr. Billy Cobham had come through the school before I got there.  He was an enlisted man just like me.  All I could ever hear were praises of how good Billy was.  He is ambidexterous.  He is a master sight reader. He plays the full percusion ensemble..ie...snare, bass drum, cymbals, tympany, xylophone, bells, vibraphone, any and all auxilliary percusion.  If you can hit it and make a sound Billy is a master.  He has what some might call freakish skill, like a Tiger Woods or a Venus Williams.  All men are not created equal, sorry.

Is all of this necessary to have a good time and rejoice in serving the Lord.  No, but let us be all that we can be, even if it is not in the army.

Music has a lot to do with feeling and projecting how you feel to others.  What comes from the heart goes to the heart. How do we hear God?  He speaks to us through our hearts.  Learn to communicate and express good feeling and music will take care of itself.

All equal doesn't mean all equal in the same detailed way. All equal means all equal overall.  My strength may be your weakness, and your strength may be my weakness.  But, overall we all are equal in what we have to say musically if we practice. 8)

I play everything by ear and feel.  I don't read.  (Well,  I know basic stuff.)  I wish there was a Drummers Collective here in Orlando Fla. where I'm at.  I would be a dedicated student.  (Not that I am now, I study a lot of Videos and Gospel Concerts.)

What's up yall.  i'm the new kid on the block.  Anyways,  I'm a senior in High School and I Play in the band, so i obviously have to read.  But, I play Timpani so i rarely use my snare skills. On the flp side, I play in church by ear.  Not to diss reading or any thing but imagine playing an entire church service with sheet music!!

Alright that's cool. 8)   Nicely put.  Now we have 2 Universities.  (You have to read old posts to find out the other one.)

Anyway, I was told by a very good jazz drummer that to learn music theory all you have to do is LISTEN to music; CD's and stuff and also play with different people.
