NO MORE TRANSPOSE QUESTION
« on: June 22, 2011, 09:49:39 AM »
Hey LGM,

I'm working with Jamal Hartwell's No more Transpose and I'm on Eb.  He gives some progressions to learn but my question is CAN YOU BE ON A CERTAIN SCALE DEGREE AND THE ROOT NOT BE TO CORRESPONDING NOTE ON THE SCALE.  Example:  He gives 5-1-4

5= RH: Bb,F          LF: Ab,C,Db,F   (Bbm9)
1= RH: Eb,Bb,Eb   LF: G,C,Db,F    (Eb7/9/13)
4= RH: Bb,Eb        LF: G,Bb,C,Eb  (GMaj9)

Another example:  3-6-2-5-1

For the 2 the root is a C  (C,F,Ab,Bb,C,Eb,G) [Fm9]

Are these mistakes or is this possible?  I DON'T PLAY WITH A BASS PLAYER

Thanks for any input!

That '4' looks like a perfect4th in the LH - more like Cm7/Bb. (Close cousin to the Tritone - Aug4th)
This kind of voicing seems popular with Gospel/Jazz players.
What kind of chord progression? Maybe a walkdown like Cm, Cm/Bb, Ab ???
If it seems incomplete, just substitute a C (root) as the bottom note in the LH...

I believe the 4 chord - Bb was meant to be an Ab, it's a common progression...AbM9

Thanks.  I really think these are just mistakes.  These chord names are driving me insane!  LOL I think the names are wrong on some too.  But overall it's a great program, it's been helping me.  I just don't want to learn the wrong chords.

It's probably just typos, unless it's rootless voicing for chords with the bass player or organ pedal playing the bass notes. Having the chord names should be good enough. Since u should already know basic theory, u can come up with your own voicings.

5= RH: Bb,F          LF: Ab,C,Db,F   (Bbm9)
1= RH: Eb,Bb,Eb   LF: G,C,Db,F    (Eb7/9/13)
4= RH: Bb,Eb        LF: G,Bb,C,Eb  (GMaj9)

Are you really playing full chords in the LH? Looks backwards to me. ?/?

What does the LF stand for?

Oops I meant left hand not LF.  I think he makes mistakes on some of the names too.  I looked up some of the chords and the notes are different than what he says.  I'm just going to email him I think he has corrections.

It's a lot of work to do. By the time you get finished, you should be SHONUFF Beastly!! I got it 2 years ago and it took me a year and a half to get through it. I still have keys that I love more than others. Playing in E is so much fun!!!!!!! People are shocked when you play in A and E around here. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

welcome Life!!!  learn to play in ANother key besides E!!!! unless ya wanna be a guitar player ha ha ha

I played cont p+ w for TOOOOO many years-seems ALL we ever played was E B G C

To answer your question,the bass-if not playing within the specific chord adds flavor.It helps add/relieve "tension" and assists movement.

A lot of times it is called a suspended chord,like a C chord C E G over an F bass.

In "organ-eese" I think the correct term is pedal point.Do a search in the organ room for Diversi 379;he posted a lot of good stuff along these lines
